BLOOMFIELD -- Matt Britton is beginning his second season at high school boys basketball coach at Bloomfield, his alma mater.

He has two full-time varsity players returning from last year's 12-12 squad that finished 4-4 in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference.

"We are really young," said Britton. "We are really in the second year of a rebuilding project.

"Last year was the demolition phase of rebuilding. We had to tear down and get rid of things in order to build things back up. This is the second year. We have some nice young pieces that will help us shape and mold the program in the future."

Ben Hays, a 5-9 senior guard, scored just under 14 points per game, the leading returning scorer.

"Ben shot 41 percent from 3-point range and really has improved his shot," said Britton. "He can do a lot of things offensively.

"He can shoot it or drive it and create opportunities for himself and his teammates. We really need a consistent effort from him this season."

Kyle Robinson is a 6-2 junior who worked his way into the starting line-up by the end of last season. He averaged 4.4 points per game.

"Kyle has worked very, very hard," said Britton. "He really came on at the end of his sophomore season and had some very good games for us.

"We really expecting big things from Kyle this year in our frontcourt."

Evan Fuller, a 5-8 sophomore, and 5-5 junior Jared Myers are battling for time at point guard, according to Britton.

"Jared played a little on varsity while Evan played primarily junior varsity," Britton said. "They both are very good defenders, which is what you need to set the tone for your defense.

"It is good to have some depth at that position."

Taylor Skinner, a 5-9 junior, and 5-10 freshman Drake Frederick are vying for the two guard position, said Britton.

"Both Taylor and Drake are very good athletes," said Britton. "Both can really shoot it.

"It is good to have a lot of competition for spots, which has made our practices very competitive."

Jared Bond, Clayton Burch, Logan Bucher, Connor Dowden and Jesse Helms are among the candidates to play a wing position for the Cardinals.

"It is good to have four or five kids playing for one spot," said Britton. "Because of that, practices have been pretty intense.

"I think the kids can see that varsity playing time is up for grabs. We should be able to mix and match line-ups depending on what is needed and who we are playing."

Along with Robinson, J.J. Kingsley, Eli Combs and 6-5 freshman Brandon VanSant are battling for time at the power forward and center positions, according to the coach.

"This group will get an opportunity to play," said Britton. "The great upside is our young players are going to gain valuable experience.

"Guys like Bond and Robinson are showing the way for the younger kids."

Britton said he has not had a younger team in his 11 years of coaching.

"To be honest, I really don't know what to expect with such a young group," he said. "I am very excited about having such a young team.

"The players hustle and work hard in practice every day, without comment. They are enthusiastic. We have a lot of kids that we hope can grow into varsity roles. That is one of the reasons we have 14 kids that will dress varsity."

Britton said whatever this group achieves will be because of two things.

"We have to defend and we will have to take care of the backboard," he said. "We are just going to take things one day at a time and try to get better each day.

"But it is really hard to tell what kind of team will can become. We just have to keep working and we will get better."

The Cardinals will open the season Wednesday when they play at Union.
