Teams gear up for first full weekend

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

The Linton-Stockton Miners look add to their opening night success when they travel to Owen Valley for a road game on Friday before their home opener against Bloomfield on Saturday. With Thanksgiving out of the way and Christmas staring us right in the face, you know that the Indiana High School basketball season is about to kick into another gear.

This weekend's area hoop schedule features nine boys games and one girls game.

Bloomfield will play a varsity-only girls game Saturday at Dugger against Union with an unofficial start time scheduled for noon. Both teams will play Thursday but the Lady Cards are 1-0 in league play and 2-2 overall while Union is 0-1, 1-3.

The Union Bulldogs hope to snap a season-opening two game losing streak when they host Clay City and Eminence in back-to-back games this weekend. The Lady Cards have won nine in a row against the Lady Bulldogs, who last defeated Bloomfield 49-44 back on Jan. 6, 2003 at Dugger. BHS won 64-28 last year.

Friday's boys schedule features four games, including two conference games. Clay City (0-1, 0-0) will play at Union (0-2, 0-1), Linton-Stockton (1-0, 0-0) will travel to Spencer to face Owen Valley (1-0), White River Valley (1-0) will play the first of two weekend road games at South Knox (1-0) and Bloomfield (3-0, 1-0) will play the only area team yet to play -- Shakamak -- at Guy Glover Gymnasium.

Saturday's schedule features five boys games, including WRV's first conference game at North Central (1-1, 0-2), Shakamak hosting 1-0 Sullivan, Mitchell (0-1) at 2-0 Eastern Greene, Union will host Eminence (0-1) and Bloomfield will play at Linton-Stockton in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference contest.

Coach Steve Brett and his SHS Lakers will be trying to fill the void left by Brock Dowell and Justin Crody.

"We lost two pretty important ingredients at point guard (Dowell) and a big guy in the middle," Brett said. "And those two guys made up a lot of our scoring last year."

Brett said he hopes that returning players Brodie Crowe, Patrick Green, Kyle Schubla, Brandon Morin, Mark West and Dylan Collins all make a contribution this year.

The Cardinals have played more games than anyone and will start the first of three consecutive double weekends.

Bloomfield has defeated Union, Paoli and Owen Valley to begin the season. Senior guard Ben Hays is averaging 18.3 ppg, including scoring a season-high 23 in the win over Union.

Kyle Robinson is scoring 15.3 ppg. He has been very consistent offensively, scoring no less than 14 and no more than 17.

The Cardinals used a last-second 3-pointer by Logan Bucher to edge Paoli by one point and Owen Valley by three.

BHS made 20 of 25 free throws, including 15 of 18 in the fourth quarter. Hays was 10 of 12 in the final eight minutes and was 13 of 16.

"We played a great game against Paoli, who is probably as good as anyone will we face this year," said BHS coach Matt Britton. "I think we had tired legs against Owen Valley.

"I think we benefitted a lot from playing in our own tournament, especially our younger guys. We have a double conference weekend, starting with a well coached Shakamak team. This will be another tough challenge for our young guys."

The Miners dominated North Knox, winning by 29 points last weekend at Bicknell. Austin Karazsia and Dess Fougerousse each scored 24 points.

Owen Valley has started 1-2 under third-year coach Chad Smith, losing to Eastern Greene and BHS at the Cardinal Classic. They defeated Vincennes Rivet in the semifinals Saturday at Bloomfield. Josh Parker scored 19 in the 48-45 loss against the Cardinals.

The Miners have lost 14 of the last 15 to the Patriots.

Bloomfield has a 14-7 advantage over Shakamak in recent meetings.

The Cards have won 14 and the Miners two in the past 16 games in the series.

Sullivan opened the season with an 85-70 victory over South Knox on Nov. 21. Brooks Weszely had 24 points for the Arrows while Michael Willis (17), Hunter King (12) and Nathan Pirtle (11) combined for 40 points.

It was South Knox's only game to date. Isiah Stafford had 18 points for new Spartan coach Mark Rohrer.

North Central, the Saturday foe for WRV, is 1-1, 1-0 in the conference, having lost to Eastern Greene last Saturday.

The Wolverines defeated Shoals in its season opener. Luke Mowery had 18 points, Mitch Ingram scored 15 and Cade Hill had four steals and four assists.

"We just have gotten back to work," said WRV coach J.B. Neill. "We really don't know much about South Knox and North Central.

"South Knox has a new coach and coach (Ryan) Kamman's kids will play hard at North Central. It will be a challenge weekend with two road games."

Eastern Greene will play its third straight home game against MHS Saturday. Tyler Brough is scoring 21 points per game whil Logan Frye is scoring 7.5 ppg and Kurtis Stille 9.5. Nathan Sparks has averaged six points per game.

"We have to play with more intensity and energy than we did against North Central," said new EGHS coach Levi Carmichael. "We cannot afford to play lackluster or afford to go through the motions.

"We need to play hard for 32 minutes."

Union will be looking for its first win as they host Clay City in a SWIAC game and then entertain former Tri-River Conference rival Eminence Saturday night.

The Bulldogs, who lost their opener at home against Bloomfield and then fell at North Knox Tuesday, are led in scoring by Ian Hamburg, who is scoring 13 points per game on average.

Austin Robertson, who scored 10 against the Cards, along with Ethan Fettig and Zac Birdsong are among the UHS starters.

"We're just going to have to strip it down and go back to the fundamentals," said second year UHS coach Chip Langley. "Turnovers plagued us (against Bloomfield), especially when we got tired.

"We didn't do too bad on the rebounding, but you've got to have win the battle of the points, not necessarily the battle of the boards."

All of the boys games are scheduld to tip off with junior-varsity action at 6 p.m.
