SWITZ CITY -- White River Valley girls basketball coach A.J. Graves has been searching for consistency from his Lady Wolverines. On Thursday night, he found it.

WRV remained unbeaten in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference with a 56-34 victory over visiting Union.

"We have been playing pretty well defensively and we did that again tonight," said Graves, who's Lady Wolverines came up with 13 steals and forced the Lady Bulldogs into 22 turnovers. "Our defense really set the tone for our offense, which defense always does.

"We were able to force some turnovers and convert them into easy baskets, especially early in the game."

WRV, who improved to 5-1 overall and pushed its SWIAC record to 4-0, shot over 58 percent in each of the first two quarters. They made 7 of 12 shots in the first and second quarters as they led 16-7 and 33-16 at the first two quarter stops.

"When we go up against teams like Bloomington North and Vincennes Rivet, we have to be able to score," said Graves. "We have played well on offense, but in spurts.

"Tonight was the first time that we were really consistent, making the extra pass and getting our feet squared before taking the shot."

Union, who dropped to 1-4, 0-2, had not played since a 51-19 victory over Eminence on Nov. 15.

"It looked like we hadn't played in two weeks," Union coach Benji Boyd said of not playing in exactly 14 days. "We worked on playing against pressure in practice, but we just did not do a very good job of taking care of the ball.

"These girls work so awfully hard, but tonight we looked sluggish. When we work on things in practice, it is just about a third of what it is like against a team like WRV. You have to give them a lot of credit. A.J. does a good job of coaching them and they are a solid team."

Allison Wininger led the winners with 19 points as she made 8 of 12 shots, including 3 of 4 from long range.

"She is a good player," said Boyd. "She has just continued to get better. She really hurt us with her offense."

Maddy Dyer finished with 11 points and four steals.

Madison Hockman and Briauna George-Fisher each dished out four assists and WRV had 15 on 24 baskets.

"We had a lot of different girls that contributed tonight," said Graves. "Our ball movement was good and the girls were unselfish."

Union was paced by Hannah Sullivan's 13 points. Hallie Smith made 6 of 6 free throws as part of an 11-point performance.

There was no junior varsity game at Union's request.

The Lady Bulldogs will host Bloomfield at noon Saturday while WRV will play at North Knox Monday, starting with the jv game at 6 p.m.
