Union earns second win

Monday, December 3, 2012

Union High School limited Washington Catholic to 10 points over the final 16 minutes as the Lady Bulldogs earned their second victory.

UHS improved to 2-5 after a 43-33 victory at "The Birdcage" Monday night in a non-conference girls basketball game.

"The (Elizabeth) Perkins girl ran wild for WC, scoring 13 of her 17 points in the first half," said Union coach Benji Boyd. "We decided not to let her touch the ball after that and we put Hallie (Smith) on her. She kept her in check and when she got tired we put Kolbi (Reynolds), Autumn (Secrest) and Cali (Hale) on her.

"We just wanted to keep a fresh body on her. Without Perkins, they don't quite know what to do."

Smith and Hannah Sullivan each scored nine points for the winners and Reynolds and Secrest both finished with eight.

"The girls played awfully hard and pretty well," said Boyd. "This is not an easy place to play.

"This was a typical Washington Catholic team. They are physical and see how far they can push you. The girls competed and played smart."

Union, who does not have a junior varsity team, will play at Shoals Tuesday (tonight), starting at 6:30 p.m.
