Union took advantage of 26 fouls by North Central, making 25 of 38 free throws, as the visiting Lady Bulldogs defeated the host LadyBirds 44-40 in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference girls basketball game Thursday night.

"It was a hack fest," said a laughing Union coach Benji Boyd. "The two teams combined for 47 fouls and 62 free throws.

"We have to work on moving our feet on defense instead of hacking as they go by."

Union improved to 3-6, 1-3 in the conference. North Central slipped to 2-8, 0-4.

"I told the girls at least we were able to come out of this with a win," said Boyd. "It is a closely contested game.

"We have been on the short end of the stick in so many of these kinds of games. It was good to win one."

Hallie Smith made 11 of 16 free throws and scored a game-high 14 points. Karissa Jobe and Kolbi Reynolds each scored 10 points as they combined to make 14 of 22 freebies.

Union will host Palestine-Hutsonville, Ill. in another varsity-only game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The game was listed as Monday on earlier schedules.
