SWITZ CITY -- The White River Valley Wolverines used a strong defensive start to set the tone for their 54-39 victory over the visiting Eminence Eels here Friday night in a non-conference high school boys basketball game.

The Wolverines did not allow a point in the first quarter, jumping out to a 9-0 lead that they would extend to a 17-1 advantage with just under six minutes remaining in the second. Wolverine coach J.B. Neill was pleased with his club's defensive effort, saying "I thought defensively we did a nice job, except for about the last 1:25 when we fell apart, but that's the way it goes."

By that time the game was already well out of reach for the visiting Eels, who trailed by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter.

The Wolverines were led in scoring by Cade Hill, who scored a game-high 16 points by going 4 of 10 from the field and 8-for-10 shooting from the free throw line.

Luke Mowery and Trey Gamble both contributed 10 points to the Wolverine cause, while Nick Johnson and Michael Fisher chipped in five points apiece. Mowery and Fisher also led the Wolverines in rebounding with each grabbing six boards. White River Valley also got four points from Justin Barnett, three points from Mitch Ingram, and a late free throw by Hunter Cornelius.

Coach Neill was pleased with performance his team put in against the Eels.

"We've been struggling to put a complete game together, but I thought tonight we got a little closer. We're still not where we need to be, but I thought that tonight we got closer."

There was no junior varsity game as the this was the second game of a girls-boys varsity double dip between the Eels and WRV.

The Wolverines (4-0) return to action next Saturday, Dec. 15 when they go on the road for a SWIAC matchup against the Bloomfield Cardinals. The junior varsity contest scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
