Lady Thunderbirds drop to 5-3

Saturday, December 8, 2012

Host Washington took advantage of a less than intense effort by Eastern Greene Saturday, as the host Lady Hatchets came up with a 58-45 victory in a non-conference high school girls basketball game at the Hatchet House.

It was the fifth win in seven games for WHS.

"Coming off of a big win against a rival and conference foe like Bloomfield (Thursday), I was disappointed in our intensity today," said EGHS coach Zack Stevens. "We got down by double figures then we would get back within seven or nine.

"But when we would make a big play, the girls would not get very excited. When we did bad things, they did not seem to care. We just had a lack of focus."

Stevens said he was pleased with only committing 10 turnovers and the offensive output of Sierra New, made four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. He also said that Hannah Resler (eight points) continues to be very aggressive.

He said there was one ultimate different in the outcome.

"The main difference in my mind was that we gave them a lot of second chance opportunities," said Stevens. "They must have had at least 15 extra possessions because of their offensive rebounding.

"They have size and strength inside and a couple of nice post players that we had trouble matching up with. They are a good team, but we have to find a way to overcome teams that outsize us."

Washington also won the junior varsity game.

Eastern Greene (5-3) will be off until Thursday when they host White River Valley in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference game.

"This was a rough week," said Stevens. "The girls played well in all three games.

"We have a little time to get ready for WRV and another big conference game."
