Union earns fourth win

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

Union limited visiting Palestine-Hutsonville (Ill.) to just five points over the final eight minutes as the host Lady Bulldogs rallied for a 47-43 victory in a high school girls basketball game at Dugger Tuesday night.

"I thought we won the game with our defense in the fourth quarter," said Union coach Benji Boyd. "We were down five (38-33) going to the last quarter and I told the girls, "It was now over never and that we had to win it on the defense end.'

"We could not allow them to score 13, like they did in the second and third quarters, because we could not score enough to win."

Union (4-6) outscored the visitors 14-5 in the final frame.

The Lady Bulldogs got a season-high 23 points from Hallie Smith, who hit two 3-pointers and made 11 of 14 free throws.

Hannah Sullivan made 7 of 8 freebies as part of a 15-point performance.

Union hit on 18 of 28 foul shots compared to 12 of 19 for P-H.

The Lady Bulldogs will play another varsity-only game Thursday at Clay City, starting at 6:30 p.m.
