For the Shakamak Lakers, that situation arose against Terre Haute North in the consolation round of the Wabash Valley Classic here Saturday afternoon at Terre Haute South. The result was a 68-40 loss.
"We knew it would be a rough ballgame and we handled it the best we could," Shakamak coach Steve Brett said. "We're just not physically able to handle a stronger, more physical team - we're just not strong enough to do that."
Things quickly went from difficult to nearly impossible as the Lakers found themselves staring at a 17-2 deficit after one quarter. Their only tallies of the frame came when Brodie Crowe hit a pair of free throws with just over a minute to play.
Shakamak finally hit their first field goal early in the second quarter when Patrick Green drilled a 10-footer that made the score 17-4 with just 10 seconds into the frame. From there, it was mostly an offensive show by the Patriots - and a lot hard lessons for the Lakers.
"In a tournament like this it shows you what you need to work on," Brett said. "It exposes weaknesses - some of them you know you have - and it tells you what you need to work on a little bit more."
Terre Haute North senior Steven Davis drained a game-high 22 points to lead a Patriot offense that shot at a 54 percent rate. Shakamak was held to just 36 percent from the field (12 of 33) led by Crowe's 17 points.
"We're not as physical and as strong as we need to be," Brett said. "We work on that some, but we need to work on that some more.
"God only gives you so much size and quickness and they've got more than we have. But our guys gave a good effort, we battled pretty decently, hit our free throws and kept them off the line."
Aside from the opening salvo, the Patriots did most of their damage in the third quarter when they outscored Shakamak 24-14 and turned away any hopes of a Laker comeback.
Davis drained 15 of his game-high tally in the frame to contrast a sting of miscues, misfires and missed chances for Shakamak.
In the ill-fated frame, the Lakers were a respectable 4 of 6 from the field, but they handed the basketball over five times and had only three offensive rebounds. Meanwhile the Patriots went on an outburst that saw them score 17 straight points midway through the game.
"Our kids gave a good effort and we tried to do a couple things throughout the game that we did have time to work on and for the most part we didn't do a bad job of it," Brett said. "I'd like to have had a little more time to work on it, but any tournament you don't have a lot of time."
The Lakers will now set their sights on the Greene County Invitational and knocking off Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference mate North Central in Wednesday's second game at White River Valley, starting at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The Lakers finish their run in the Wabash Valley Classic 1-2 and now stand at 3-5 overall, including a forfeit over Owen Valley to open the WVC when the Patriots did not travel to Terre Haute because of bad weather.
