SWITZ CITY -- Shakamak senior Brodie Crowe had a stellar performance as the Lakers rolled to a 65-37 win over North Central in the opening round of the Greene County Invitational here Wednesday night.

Crowe torched the Thunderbird defense for a game-high 36 points while hauling a team-lead sharing five rebounds and three steals.

He shared the spotlight with Jeff Bessling who matched his five rebounds and Brandon Morin who equaled his three steals as SHS improved to 4-5 on the year and North Central fell to 1-7.

"He had a good ballgame, I thought everybody had a good game tonight," Shakamak coach Steve Brett said. "We moved the ball and got good shots for the most part. And he took good shots and fortunately he was in a rhythm and shot a good percentage tonight."

Crowe lit up the scoreboard hitting 14 of 19 shots from the field and a whopping 6 of 9 attempts from 3-point range. It was the leading performance in a night that saw the Lakers connect on 57 percent of their shots from the field and 8 of 14 (36 percent) from distance.

"When you shoot well everything goes better," Brett said. "Crowe's one of our leaders out there and so he goes, so goes the Lakers sometimes."

Crowe and Bessling also helped the Lakers haul in a solid 26-19 edge on the glass.

Only North Central freshman Gavin Stanifer came close to matching Crowe's tally which was just two points short of his career high of 38 he tallied against Union on Dec. 7.

Stanifer finished with 10 points for a team that according to Brett, will get better over time.

"We should control things, they're a pretty inexperienced team," Brett said. "They've got one senior, one junior and whole lot of sophomores and freshmen -- so they're basically playing a varsity schedule with a JV team.

"They're going to get better, they'll keep working at it and (coach) Ryan (Kamman) will work them pretty good and they'll get better as the year goes along."

The Lakers held the Thunderbirds to single digits in all but the third quarter. They led 14-9 at the first stop, 33-17 at the intermission and thanks to a 17-12 margin in the third stanza they led 50-29 entering the final eight minutes.

"One of the things I was pleased with the most was probably our defensive effort," Brett said. "They have guys that can take it off the dribble and for the most part I think we did a good job of containing that."

Next up will be a meeting with Class 2A No. 8 Linton-Stockton in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday while North Central is relegated to Saturday's consolation round where they will face Union at 10 a.m.

"We played well on this floor and that's important," Brett said. "We shot the ball well on this floor and that should give us some confidence going in.

"We know that Linton is a better team than North Central and we'll have to play a better game, too."

The Miners won their earlier meeting with the Lakers 72-51.
