SWITZ CITY -- Revenge is sweet, especially if it spoils the debut of your opponent in a long-time tournament.

That was the case Thursday night for the White River Valley Wolverines against Bloomfield.

Luke Mowery drained a game-high 20 points and Michael Fisher hauled in a game-high seven rebounds as the WRV spoiled Bloomfield's debut in the Greene County Invitational 46-23 here Thursday night.

White River Valley's win in the final game of the opening round spoiled the debut of the Cardinals in the GCI field and helped them avenge a 41-40 loss at the hands of the Cardinals on Dec. 15 at Glover Gymnasium in Bloomfield.

"We didn't feel like the first time we played them that we played well at all -- everybody thought it was a great game but us," WRV coach J.B. Neill said. "We were even on the boards in the first game and it shouldn't be that way.

"The bottom line we just played harder tonight than the first time we played them."

The BHS tourney debut after not participating for the first 42 years of the GCI, was anything but what Cardinal coach Matt Britton envisioned when his team officially decided to take part in the tournament last year.

"We just didn't have anybody that was willing to play hard and play physical tonight," Britton said. "WRV just enforced their will inside, on the boards and what-not.

"I just didn't feel like our kids were up for the challenge tonight and we're just going to have to find some effort one way or another."

It was an effort produced just one lone point off the bench (Conner Dowden) and just 11 points in the second half -- and no more than eight points in any frame (the second) on the night.

"We weren't moving the ball very well and we weren't finishing when we did get shots," Britton said. "And credit WRV for doing a nice job offensively as well."

Mowery lead an offense that took full advantage of a misfiring and almost non-existent Bloomfield offense.

The senior outshot Bloomfield himself connecting on 9 of 15 shots from the field while the Cards were a dismal 6 of 18.

"Luke did a fine job for us in the post," Neill said. "That's what he's capable of doing and I thought our guys did a fine job of getting it to him."

Mowery and Fisher combined to lead a rebounding attack that saw the Wolverines carry a decisive 26-16 margin into the semifinals against defending tourney champ Eastern Greene on Friday night.

"We had guys sweeping to the glass and getting putbacks -- and that's what we've got to do," Neill said. "The first game of the Greene County Tourney is a big one, you lose that first one and you're in the loser's bracket."

Bloomfield now drops to the loser's bracket where they will take on Clay City at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

"Congratulations to WRV for a game well-played on their part," Britton said. "Hopefully we'll regroup and hopefully find a kid or two that is willing to give an effort on Saturday."

The Wolverines are 6-2 and the Cardinals fell to 6-4.
