LYONS ---- The town of Lyons bids farewell Friday to the traditional post office that has served the small Greene County community for decades and welcomes a new mode of operation.

A Village Post Office will be opened Friday morning in C & F Variety Store, located at 195 West Broad Street (State Road 67) with hopes of providing an economic boast to the small store.

On Friday, C & F Variety becomes the 22nd Village Post Office (VPO) to open in the Greater Indiana District.

The new postal center will be opened by the U.S. Postal Service's Manager of Post Office Operations Cindy Klaiber. Several USPS executives and local officials will be present at the event. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. and an open house will follow from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Last year, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.

VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging., according to a news release from the U.S. Postal Service.

C & F Variety is a thrift store that Mike and Tammy Calvert opened in 2003 when Mike retired from the military. "As part of the military, we had lived in many places and acquired 'stuff' along the way, so Mike and I decided to open a store to see if we could sell some of it," said Calvert.

In addition to used clothing, toys, books and knick-knacks, C & F Variety also sells new plumbing fixtures and hardware. Calvert hopes the VPO will give the store an extra boost in business.

"We're really looking forward to having the VPO in our store," she said. "Lyons is an almost retirement community, and we're hoping it will serve as a convenience for our customers, who can come in here and buy stamps and get postal products when the Post Office is closed for the day."

C & F Variety's hours of operations are Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays. The store is closed on Sundays and Mondays and also the last Saturday in the month.
