SWITZ CITY -- Union was hampered by poor shooting, poor rebounding and poor ball handling as they dug a hole they could not overcome.

The Bulldogs shot 33 percent in the first half and committed 14 of 23 turnovers as they fell to county, conference and corporation rival North Central 66-52 in a high school boys basketball game in the consolation round of the Greene County Invitational here Saturday morning.

Union misfired on 16 of its first 24 shots, falling behind 38-20 at intermission.

"We came out slow," said Union coach Chip Langley. "We really struggled to do anything well early.

"We couldn't get anything going in the first half."

The Bulldogs did show signs of life in the third quarter.

Trey Bedwell, Austin Robertson (two) and Ian Hamburg combined for four baskets in the first two minutes and four seconds of the second half, as the 8-0 spurt trimmed the deficit to 38-28.

The four field goals matched the Bulldog total for each of the first two quarters.

Zac Birdsong buried a 3-pointer as Union cut the deficit to nine -- 40-31.

A free throw by Sterling Langley and a basket by Bedwell (10 points, four rebounds and three assists) got the lead down to nine again at 43-34. But the Bulldogs would come no closer.

"I thought one positive today was the play of Bedwell, our sophomore guard," said Langley. "He was aggressive and took the ball to the basket to try and make things happen.

"But we still have to find a way to cut down on our turnovers and do a better job on the boards. We gave the ball away 23 times, which is just way too many."

The final rebound numbers were close -- 37-35 -- with North Central leading. Hamburg grabbed eight for the Bulldogs, who are still playing without center Ethan Fettig.

But North Central had a 22-10 advantage on the offensive end.

"We got killed on the offensive boards," said Langley. "You can't give up that many second shots."

Hamburg finished with 13 points and Robertson added 11.

Freshman Gavin Stanifer missed 12 shots, but led the winners with 16 points.
