SWITZ CITY -- After making just eight shots in the first 24 minutes, White River Valley connected on seven 3-pointers and scored 31 points the fourth quarter, but it proved to be too little, too late as Linton-Stockton prevailed 56-50, winning its first Greene County Invitational championship since 2006 here Saturday night.

"You have to give our kids all the credit for the composure they showed tonight," said Linton-Stockton coach Joey Hart. "They were able to survive an unbelievable onslaught by WRV.

"We really did not know a lot about them going into this tournament. The coached stayed up till 2:30 this morning watching tape. They are a pretty good team who does a lot of things well."

The Wolverines, who made 10 of 25 3-pointers, got an early start on their furious finish when Jorden English tossed in a shot from beyond half court to end the third quarter, but the Miners still led 32-19 going to the fourth.

Cade Hill, Michael Fisher and Mitch Ingram each hit two threes and Trey Gamble one in the final eight minutes as the Wolverines refused to go away.

Ingram's 3-pointer cut the lead to 55-50 with just over 22 seconds remaining. It was as close as the Wolverines had been since trailing 19-14 early in the third quarter before the Miners used a 13-5 run over the final 6 minutes of the period to take command.

Dess Fougerousse (32) of Linton-Stockton was named the most valuable player of the Greene County Invitational Saturday night after the Miners defeated WRV in the title game Saturday night. (By Shad Cox). [Order this photo]
Guard Ryan Woodward hit 1 of 2 free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining to give the Miners a final six-point cushion.

"I missed two," said Woodward, who accounted for all six of his points by making 6 of 8 foul shots, all in the fourth quarter. "Since I work on shooting them all the time, I wasn't nervous.

"When your number is called, you just have to step up."

Miner forward Dess Fougerousse, who was named tournament MVP, finished with 16 points, four assists and five rebounds, said it was a team victory.

"It is awesome to win MVP, but you can't win it unless your team wins," said Fougerousse. "Everybody contributed to us winning the county tournament.

"Keith (Fulk) made some huge shots. Bryant (Jackson) and Jackson (Bohnert) also were big. Woody (Woodward) made some big free throws and AK (Austin Karazsia) played great."

Karazsia, who had his minutes limited by foul trouble in a double-overtime victory in the semifinals against Shakamak Friday, took control at both ends early.

He blocked three of the first six WRV shots as he finished with six swats.

He was 9 of 9 at the foul line and 5 of 7 from the field, finishing with a game-high 19 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds.

"Our first goal was to win this," said Karazsia, who along with Fulk made the all-tournament team. "It was great to cut down the nets, practice for the sectional.

"Everything just felt right tonight, starting in warm-ups. Last night I never got it going, but tonight everybody played well."

Hart said that was very determined to put his stamp on this game.

"AK was a man tonight," said Hart. "We have a couple of really special players.

"He worked through foul trouble last night to make some big plays late. When he was making shots in the paint tonight, he went to line and made free throws."

The foul line proved to be a big advantage for the Miners.

They made 20 of 29 compared to 6 of 9 for the Wolverines.

Linton-Stockton also was efficient from the field, making 17 of 29 -- 59 percent.

The Wolverines connected on 17 of 50 -- 34 percent. They were 7 of 25 from two-point range.

Ingram and Fisher both finished with 11 points and Hill added 10. Hill and Luke Mowery, who had seven points, four assists and six rebounds, both made the all-GCI team.

Ingram led the Wolverines with seven rebounds.

This was WRV's first appearance in the title game since winning it all in 2005.

Great Job Linton Miner Coaching Staff!! You had the boys prepared for this tournament. Damn good game coaching as well. The chalk board was utilized often which resulted in highly effective plays. Also, thanks for not teaching the kids to throw shoulders into the opponent's chests and grabbing shirts. Thanks for teaching them the game of basketball!!

La all the way you did not watch the same games I did shouulders throwing head down I thought you guys where still playing football

-- Posted by SHOOOTER on Sun, Jan 6, 2013, at 9:31 AM

Bottom line it was a tough physical game. Both teams push and shove and drive, that is how the game is played. No one team was different than the other so please don't start that type of chatter. The Miners played great and won while WRV made a great comeback attempt. Once again great job Miners.

Great game by the Miners! Linton utilized their size, strength and athleticism to pound the ball inside all night... WRV had no choice but to hang on or else give up layups.

All I can say is that was one GREAT SHOT made by Jorden English!! (Yes, we are VERY PROUD parents and fans) Both teams played very well and both should be proud.

Very proud of the Miners. It was a great game to watch. Even though I am true Miner fan, I had to clap for English when he sank that shot!

Probably first time in long time that the visiting school had less fouls than the home Wrv.
