Catherine Barclay (Smith) Pannell, 96, of Odon and formerly of Bicknell,, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at Daviess Community Hospital.
Catherine was born Oct. 16, 1916 in Vincennes, the daughter of James and Catherine (Barclay) Smith. She married Earl Pannell on Jan. 15, 1963 and he passed in Sept.1978. She was a 60 year member of the the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, which she joined on December 1, 1952 and was the State President from 1973-1974. She was also a National Council Member #5 Indiana-Missouri from 1979-1981, a Big 10 President from Indiana from 1985-1986, and Indiana State Secretary from 1976-1995 and 1996-1997. She attended and sang in the choir for the Bicknell First Christian Church and was involved in the Christian Womens' Fellowship, and was very involved in funeral dinners.
Catherine is survived by her children, Richard Messeman and his wife Debbie, of Navarre, FL, Sandra Haney and her husband Max, of Edwardsport, and Catherine Reeves and her husband Nolan of Switz City; her step-children Kenneth Pannell and his wife Jewel of Indianapolis, Don Pannell and his wife Susan of Bloomington, and Roy Pannell and his wife Nancy of Loogootee; eleven grandchildren, eight of whom she was close to, Michael and Cindy White, Patricia and Paul Sharky, Pam and Jeff Holmes, Jon and Yulanda Tankersley, Christy and Doug Chambon, Jason and Kera Messeman, and Krista Houser; nine step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-granchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one great-grandson Joshua Paul Sharky; seven brothers John, James, Alexander, William, Robert, Thomas, Hugh Smith; three sisters Jean Smith Campbell, Anne Smith Wall and Mary Smith.
The family will receive friends on Monday January 7, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home Bicknell Chapel with a V.F.W. Ladies' Auxiliary service at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013 at 1 p.m. also at the funeral home with Jon McKinnon officiating and burial following at Bicknell Memorial Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ketcham Memorial Nursing Center. The family would also like to express their gratitude to both Ketcham Memorial Nursing Center and Daviess Community Hospital for all they have done in the last two years for their mother.
