JASONVILLE -- An area church is trying to make a big statement.

Members of Blessed Hope Baptist Church in Jasonville gathered New Year's Day to place 1,000 white wooden crosses on the front lawn of the church.

According to Senior Pastor Jerry Ross, each cross represents 60,000 babies who have been aborted since the Supreme Court ruling in the Roe Vs. Wade case on Jan. 22, 1973.

(Submitted Photo) Noah Burcham (left) and Max Ryser (right) help put the crosses in place.
"Our church will turn 40-years-old in May," Ross said. "Sadly, we share our anniversary year with the Roe Vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion in America. Our church felt that we should bring awareness to this Biblical issue by placing the crosses in front of our church. We are praying that abortion ends in 2013."

According to the National Right to Life Committee's projected numbers as of this year, more than 60 million abortions have taken place in the United States of America in the past 40 years.

"The Bible not only teaches us that life begins at conception, but that God's hands are active in the formation of every baby in the womb," Ross said.

The church will leave the crosses up through January. The church is also setting aside Jan. 22 as a day of prayer and fasting. The church will be open for 24 hours, from midnight to midnight, in order for community members to come for a time of prayer. Visitors are welcome to walk along the crosses outside or come inside the church to spend time praying about the issue. Some church members are also choosing to fast that day.

"Our prayer is that this 40-year national shame would end in America," Ross said. "We joined our president and fellow Americans in grieving over the 20 innocent lives that were killed in Newtown, Conn., last month. We pray that they will join us in grieving over the nearly 60 million innocent lives that have been killed in America since Roe Vs. Wade."

Ross said his church normally reminds community members to pray about ending abortion, but with the 40-year anniversary, he and the church members wanted to draw more attention to the issue.

"We wanted to bring heightened awareness in the community," Ross said. "(Abortion) is something that is done privately. It's easy for it to go on every day and the average American doesn't think about it. But we want people to be aware and to pray about ending abortion."

Personal choice. They don't have to get an abortion if they.don't want to so couldn't those people dedicate their time to helping others so they wouldn't need to get abortions? In this economy THAT is a waste of money.

i think it is very sinful for our country to let this happen.....most of the time, it;s because the couple just wanted to play around....I think our country will be harshly judged for this atrocity...it's just like the nazi's did to the jews

BABYSBREATHBRIDE: If it is personal choice then lets hear what the inocent sin free baby has to say. Thats right the defenseless child was murdered due to a scared personal choice that someone made.If these babys dont die they are left untreated to die a slow painful death in a trash can since it is murder once the child is out of the womb. Now if a couple wants to make a justified personal choice of just play around as you say then they should be using protection but they dont becouse it is an open choice that folks like you leave available for them. In result of this, more murder, more disease passes around among, and more personal choices that affects the mother for the rest of her life. She will always wander what if what if and what about the father who didnt know? Well i can tell you what if becouse i am one. Had i known i would have turned from a boy to a man real quick and become a father to that child. Even IF i was not able to provide there are many loving folks just waiting to adopt and give me a chance to see my child again. Now that little child of mine is gone for ever becouse i had no choice in the matter. This child would now have been 10 years old and i have one empty seat at my dinner table every nite becouse of people like you making that personal choice for me.

I find it very ironic that the conservatives who are so opposed to abortion are also the ones who support the death penalty. Now it can be argued that criminals that are sentenced to death are not innocent and sin free, but I believe the Bible is pretty clear on the fact that judging man is God's job alone and that it is man's job to love and accept his fellow man and not make judgement upon him. I also believe it is pretty clear that Jesus died for man's sins and no matter what vile act that may have been committed by a criminal if they sincerely ask God for his forgiveness that it will be granted.

Also let us not forget that if these souls are now in Heaven that there is a greater purpose that we do not understand and that these souls are in Heaven because that is where God wanted them to be.

What I find ironic is Libs that think 60 million inocents killed is no big deal but will stand outside a prison gate in the cold and rain to go to bat for a cold blooded killer. What wrong with this picture??

Pastor Ross spent some time last Sunday night (1-6-13) addressing many of the questions and concerns some of you have brought up. It is a good listen. You can hear his message on the subject of abortion by logging onto the church's website and clicking "achieved sermons".

Well, RB, I am opposed to abortion. I'm also opposed to the death penalty (mostly because it appears one can never be 100% correct that a person is guilty). And I'm opposed to war, mostly because we have moved away from the idea of only in self-defense.

As an aside, being forgiven for an offense (or sin) does not mean you still must face the consequences for your actions.

While I would never condone an abortion for a pregnancy I caused, I am proud of our freedom to disagree with each other and still be respectful of each other's rights granted by law.

Therefore, I encourage all people who care so deeply about lowering abortion rates to change their focuses. Instead of debating ethics, judging your fellow neighbor, and increasing the hostility surrounding the subject, focus your energy on increasing safe sex awareness and do not be afraid to discuss and educate young members of your family regarding this topic. Let's stop abortions by eliminating the ignorance of sexually active couples which leads to unwanted pregnancies.
