Lady Bulldogs fall to No. 4 Sullivan

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

DUGGER -- Union High School girls basketball coach Benji Boyd knew that his Lady Bulldogs would be facing a tall task when Class 2A No. 4 Sullivan came for a visit Tuesday night.

But despite a 62-27 loss to the Lady Arrows, who won for the 13th time in 15 games, Boyd viewed it as a productive evening.

"After the game was decided, we looked at it as a really good scrimmage to help us prepare for Thursday night," said Boyd, who's Lady Bulldogs played for the first time since Dec. 13, falling to 4-8. "I thought the girls played really hard, which is all you can ask."

Sullivan scored the first 10 points. Korissa Jobe had the only basket in the first eight minutes for the Lady Bulldogs, who trailed 17-2 after the opening quarter.

Sullivan coach Julie Meeks, who only brought eight girls and subbed liberally in the varsity-only game, watched as her Lady Arrows made 14 of 27 shots (52 percent) as they led 31-9 at intermission.

The Lady Arrows, who led 51-20 after three quarters, were led in scoring by Indiana State recruit Rhagen Smith. The 6-2 senior center, who recently became Sullivan's all-time leading scorer, had game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Caelan Jones had 14 points, four assists and four steals.

Jaleigh Gilman also had 10 points, four steals and three assists.

"Sullivan is a really, really good team," said Boyd. "They are a very talented team.

"We just aren't equipped to defend a team like that."

After making just four baskets in the first half, Union made seven in the final two quarters.

Hallie Smith led the Lady Bulldogs with nine points. She also had six rebounds, four assists and the lone Union steal.

Korissa Jobe had seven points, two assists and one rebound.

Kolbi Reynolds contributed five points and four rebounds.

Autumn Secrest had four rebounds and two points and Hannah Sullivan finished with two points and four rebounds.

Cali Hale also scored two points and three rebounds.

"I was really pleased with our effort," said Boyd. "We are going to need that on Thursday night."

The Lady Bulldogs will play a varsity-only Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Linton-Stockton.

Note: This was the first meeting between Sullivan and Union since Jan. 13, 2009, when the Lady Arrows won 56-54.
