Lady Cards win at home

Thursday, January 10, 2013

BLOOMFIELD - The Bloomfield Lady Cardinals opened with a 9-2 run and never gave up the lead on the way to a 50-33 victory over the visiting Clay City Lady Eels in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference matchup here Thursday night.

The Lady Cardinals, who improved to 5-10 on the season and 3-3 in SWIAC play, held an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 30-16 advantage into halftime. They stretched that lead to 43-23 at the end of the third quarter, leading by as many as 24 points along the way.

Bloomfield coach Chris Hitchcock said after the game that he saw a huge improvement in his team compared to their performance Tuesday night in a 62-21 loss to Washington. "This has been a long time coming for us. We were the polar opposite of this Tuesday night. We executed what we wanted to, and you could tell the kids really wanted to win."

The Lady Cardinals were very balanced offensively, getting 10 points from Alicia Hasler and eight points from both Kristin Hall and Kari Schulte. Cheyenne Wikle and Elena Weddle each added seven points, while Kylee Moody had five. Aubrey Adams and Marisa McIntosh each had two points and Shelby Patton had one.

Hitchcock felt like he got a good effort out of his entire team, saying "That was a tremendous team effort with everyone contributing to the win. Cheyenne Wikle, Emily Bucher, and Kari Schulte rebounded in the post, Alicia Hasler and Elena Weddle really took the ball to the basket well, and the kids off the bench played spectacular."

The Lady Eels (5-8, 2-4) were led in scoring by Alex Wolfe, who had nine points. Logan Ellinger and Callie Dayhuff each added six points for the Lady Eels.

Bloomfield also prevailed in the junior varsity contest, this time by a score of 28-20.

The leader scorers for the Lady Cardinals were Shelby Patton with 10 points and Kylee Moody with seven. Madison Toon and Cheyenne Wikle each had four points, while Meaghan Bond had two and Emily Bucher added one.

The Lady Cardinals return to action next Thursday when they play host to Linton-Stockton in another SWIAC battle. The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
