Thunderbirds fall at Clay City

Friday, January 11, 2013

Eastern Greene lost its third straight, dropping a 61-50 decision at Clay City in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference high school boys basketball game Friday night.

It was the first loss in four SWIAC games for EGHS, who dropped to 9-4 overall, 3-1 in the conference. Clay City is now 7-5, 2-1.

"There is no other word to say but disappointing," said Eastern Greene coach Levi Carmichael. "We thought after losses to WRV and Shakamak that we would respond better.

"Tyler Brough and Kurtis Stille are giving us positive contributions, but this is three straight games that our seniors are not reacting the way we need them to do. If this continues, we will have to find kids that want to get the job done."

Blake Cessinger scored a game-high 30 points to lead the winners.

Evan Rogers added 14 for Clay City, including making four 3-pointers.

"We couldn't guard a chair," said Carmichael. "Cessinger had his way with us.

"We let him get to the basket all night."

Brough led EGHS with 27 points, including six 3-pointers. Stille had 13 points.

"We just aren't getting enough scoring from the other kids," said Carmichael. "We are just lacking options on offense."

The Thunderbirds won the junior varsity game 42-26.

Eastern Greene will play at Sullivan Friday, Jan. 18.
