Cardinals fall at South Knox

Friday, January 11, 2013

The Bloomfield Cardinals fell to 7-6 following a 54-53 loss to South Knox at Verne Friday night.

The win was just the second of the year for the hosts against nine losses.

"We shot 63 percent from the field and just missed two free throws," said BHS coach Matt Britton. "I don't know if we could play any better offensively than we did tonight.

"But we just ran into a hot team tonight in South Knox. You have to give them credit because they made 9 of 16 from 3-point range."

Bloomfield built a 14-12 lead after one quarter and a 29-21 advantage at the break before the Spartans rallied to outscore the Cardinals 33-24 over the final two stanzas -- including the final eight minutes when South Knox outscored BHS 16-9.

"We had a 14-point lead in the third quarter and they come back and made five straight threes," said Britton. "It was one of those games where we thought the team that had the ball last would win and they did.

"We did have a few too many turnovers, but overall we were pretty efficient with the ball. We just ran into a team that was really hot, just a little bit more than we were."

Ben Hays led the Cardinals with 16 points and six assists while Kyle Robinson added 14 and Brandon Van Sant added 10.

Jared Myers finished with seven and five assists, Jesse Helms added three and Connor Dowden added three for the Cardinals.

Taylor Skinner, Evan Fuller and Eli Combs also played.

"Ben Hays had a really gutsy effort tonight playing with the flu and on a bad ankle," said Britton. "I also thought that Robinson, Van Sant and Myers also played well for us."

South Knox won the junior varsity contest 32-21.

Bloomfield remains idle until Friday, Jan. 18 when they travel to Loogootee for a 6 p.m. contest.
