SWITZ CITY - White River Valley limited Mitchell to nine field goals and 23 percent shooting, but the visitors outscored the Lady Wolverines by 22 points at the foul line to come away with a 49-35 victory in a non-conference high school girls basketball game here Saturday afternoon.

Mitchell (11-2) made 28 of 45 free throws compared to 6 of 9 for WRV (9-6).

"You can't put a team on the foul line 45 times and expect to win," said WRV coach A.J. Graves. "We had the same problem against Rivet, putting them on the line 38 times.

"The girls are playing very hard, but we have to do a better job of defending without fouling."

WRV closed out the first quarter on a 11-5 outburst, taking a 15-11 lead despite 9 of 10 free throw shooting by Mitchell in the opening eight minutes.

MHS, who only made four baskets in the first half, got a 3-pointer from Mia Burton to take the lead for good at 18-15 with five minutes and 51 seconds left in the half.

"We got off to a good start," said Graves. "It was still a close game at the half (25-19 Mitchell), but they were able to continue to expand the lead at the foul line."

Maddy Dyer hit a free throw as the Lady Wolverines closed to within two points -- 29-27 - midway in the third quarter. Mitchell led 35-31 going to the fourth stanza.

Shannon Pittman made 1 of 2 freebies but WRV still trailed 40-35 with 5:35 to play. That would be the final points for the Lady Wolverines, who missed their final six shots.

"Despite the outcome, I saw a lot of positives," said Graves. "But obviously we have a lot of things to work on and have about four weeks before the sectional to get there.

"The girls are playing hard and are competing in every game. We just have to keep working to get better and I know they will get it done."

Allison Wininger led WRV with 14 points. But she fouled out with 6 minutes remaining.

MHS did not have anyone in double figures, but 10 of 11 girls scored, led by Sammie Howe and Alyssa Gardner, who both scored nine.

Mitchell won the jv game 26-23.

Briauna George-Fisher, Brittani George-Fisher and Amy Ragle each scored five points for WRV. Ashley Hooks scored three points, Lexi Graves and Lilly Hancock both scored two, Miranda Pierce one and Rachel Woods also played.

WRV will play Tuesday at South Knox.
