The Friends of Shakamak started 2013 with an incredibly well attended hike at the park on New Year's Day.
Labeled First Day Hike, the day began and ended at the log cabin in the park. The cabin was alive with as many as 40 people who came out to enjoy the park in the winter time as well as wind up their holiday celebrations.
Many thanks go to the HOBY youth (visit www.hobyindiana.org for more information) for organizing and running the games that day. Thanks also go out to the park staff who worked hard to clear snow from the roads for the hike.
The 2013 Friends of Shakamak's annual volunteer recognition and meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. This evening is for members, those who would like to become members, those who have been involved with FOS activities, or anyone who has been a supporter of Shakamak State Park. This year's meeting will include a light supper, a silent auction, judging of all photo contest submissions, and a special guest speaker on the history of Shakamak State Park.
The highlight of the evening will be the announcement and awarding of the four annual Friends of Shakamak Awards. These awards recognize outstanding effort by an individual or group for their commitment to the goals of the Friends group.
The Friends of Shakamak is a family centered organization, and therefore we encourage all members to attend and bring your families with you. The mess hall in the group camp is a wonderful facility and provides a great venue for this meeting.
Additional details are available from either Rob or Lynda at the park office (812) 665-2158. If you are interested in attending, please let us know. Send your name and contact information to us via email to Friendsofshakamak@gmail.com .
The directors of the Friends of Shakamak would like to extend a huge thank you to all of those folks who have volunteered over the past year to organize, help run, or who participated in any of the sponsored activities. This group has been in existence for less than two years and already it has become a focal point for many park related functions. None of this is possible without the continued support of our volunteers, sponsors, and members. This group has quite literally snowballed from a small group of five or six organizers to dozens of dedicated people who continue to work together to promote both the park and our local community through an ever increasing list of activities.
