LPD makes drug bust near old gas station

Monday, January 14, 2013

Two people were arrested Friday afternoon after officers from the Linton Police Department reported seeing what they believed was a hand-to-hand narcotics transaction in the parking lot of the old Swifty gas station on 2nd Street NW.

Melissa Ann Shepard, 45, Linton, was taken into custody and booked in to the Greene County Jail on a preliminary charge of dealing in a controlled substance, a class B felony.

Gerald Leroy Thompson, also 45 and also from Linton, was taken into custody and booked in to the jail on preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony, and driving while suspended with a prior conviction, a class A misdemeanor.

According to the police report, after Thompson left the scene of the meeting location where the alleged transaction took place, he was stopped for a traffic violation. When officers ran a check on his identification, his license returned as suspended with the prior.

Thompson was placed under arrest for driving while suspended then searched for contraband - none found on his person. But the report states he gave permission for officers to search his vehicle and they reported finding pills identified as a Schedule II controlled substance.

Officers then questioned Thompson and said he confirmed their suspicions that he had purchased the pills from Shepard in the transaction they observed.

Shepard was located and placed under arrest.

The investigating officer was LPD Patrolman Brock Garrison. He was assisted by other officers from the Greene County Drug Task Force.

As of Monday, both Shepard and Thompson remained in jail where they were being held without bond pending initial court hearings.

You'd think that they wouldn't do this within two blocks of the police station and on the highway to boot! Does this prove criminals aren't the smartest people?

WOW, they both look like they are 60. You can tell they been drug users for a long time. A person doesn't age like that overnight.
