Lady Cards defeat Lady Miners

Thursday, January 17, 2013

For the first time this season, Bloomfield has posted consecutive wins.

The Lady Cardinals limited visiting Linton-Stockton to eight field goals as Bloomfield came away with a 31-17 victory in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference high school girls basketball game Thursday night at Glover Gymnasium.

Bloomfield improved to 6-10, 4-3 in the SWIAC. Linton-Stockton dropped to 2-15, 0-6.

"We played a very good defensive game tonight," said BHS coach Chris Hitchcock. "We were very aggressive and were able to keep them from getting a lot of good shots.

"We did not shoot it well, but defense was the catalyst for us."

Alicia Hasler, who had a game-high 15 points, made three, 3-pointers as the Lady Cards led 16-6 at intermission. Emily Bucher scored all but two of her 10 points in the third quarter.

"Hasler hit those threes, which put us up by 10," said Hitchcock. "We led by 10 most of the game, maybe once they got it to eight.

"Bucher had a tremendous night. She got a lot of offensive rebounds in the third, scoring eight in the quarter."

Hitchcock said the Lady Miners stayed in their 1-2-2 zone and his Lady Cardinals were very patient working against it.

"It is good to finally win two in a row," said Hitchcock. "We will enjoy this and get back to work tomorrow."

Mercedes Shafford paced the Lady Miners with eight points.

"We struggled offensively and turned the ball over too much," said Miner boss Brad McKinney. "But at times we would drive by them and just missed shots.

"Not to make excuses, but we are fighting sickness and injuries. We played with no energy and execution tonight. We have to play through that."

The Lady Cardinals won the junior varsity game 50-2.

Bloomfield will play at Washington Catholic Monday. Linton-Stockton will play at Loogootee Saturday, in a varsity-only game, starting at 1 p.m.
