White River at Newberry crested Thursday night

(By Nick Schneider) The area around the town of Newberry's watch pumping station was nearly surrounded by water Wednesday evening. The White River at Newberry stood at 22.33 feet at 6 a.m. Thursday and was expected to crest later in the day at 22.4 feet ---- more than 9 feet above the 13 feet flood level at the location, according to the National Weather Service at Indianapolis. The historic high crest for the location is 29.75 feet reach on Aug. 3, 1875. On June 9, 2008, the river at Newberry reached 28.59 feet ---- the second highest reading in history. [Order this photo]
