Lady Cards win road game

Monday, January 21, 2013

Bloomfield extended its winning streak to three games after defeating host Washington Catholic 41-27 in a high school girls basketball game Monday night at The Birdcage.

The Lady Cardinals improved to 7-10 while WC slipped to 2-18.

"We really came out of the gates strong," BHS coach Chris Hitchcock said of jumping out to a 19-8 lead. "We had a tremendous defensive effort in the first quarter. We held them to 2 of 13 shooting unofficially in the first half, which tells you everything you need to know.

"We really did a good job paying attention to (Elizabeth) Perkins. She did make 8 of 10 free throws, but Elena Weddle did a great job on her, holding her without a field goal."

Weddle also paced the winners with 15 points and Emily Bucher grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with four points.

"We are starting to build a little momentum," said Hitchcock. "We would like to have some of those early games back, but we are starting to get on a little bit of a roll defensively."

BHS won the junior varsity game 36-7.

The Lady Cards will host North Daviess (Tuesday) in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference game.
