Eastern Greene wins conference game

LITTLE CINCINNATI -- Eastern Greene remained in the hunt for a share of the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference championship with a 48-39 victory over visiting Clay City here Thursday night.

Eastern Greene improved to 5-1 in league play and 7-9 overall. Clay City, who only managed 24 points over the final 24 minutes, slipped to 6-11, 2-6. WRV finished 7-1 in league play after a win at Linton-Stockton Thursday. North Daviess is 6-1 in the SWIAC with a game remaining next week against EGHS.

"We shot just 28 percent tonight and still was able to score 48 points," said Eastern Greene High School girls basketball coach Zack Stevens. "Despite that, we found ways to score and contribute.

"Despite the low shooting percentage, we forced a lot of turnovers and gave ourselves a lot of extra possessions."

Clay City scored 15 of the first 22 points, but they only managed 10 points in the middle two quarters as Eastern Greene turned a 15-7 deficit into a 36-25 lead going to the fourth quarter.

"I was happy with our defense for three quarters," said Stevens. "But we were not ready to defend in the first quarter."

Alex DuBois led the winners with 17 points.

"Alex is a senior who really played like it tonight," said Stevens. "She found a way to get to the basket and draw fouls, making 6 of 7 free throws.

"She showed a lot of character and leadership and she made a lot of good things happen."

Brittany Martin scored nine points, Kim Arthur eight and Sierra New and Hannah Resler tallied six each.

Alisha Steward paced Clay City with 13 points.

Clay City won the junior varsity game 30-27.

Lexy Burleson and Katie Morguson each scored six points for EGHS. Lenzy Hutchison scored four, Abbi Shell three and Libby Tarr added two. Miranda Blocher, Amanda Butler and Katie Igel also played.

Eastern Greene will host North Central at noon Saturday, 60 minutes earlier than previously announced for the jv start time.
