DUGGER -- Union bounced back from a slow start, rallied to take the lead, but came up on the short end of a 52-48 score to visiting Shoals, who spoiled homecoming for the Bulldogs here Friday night.

It was the third win in 13 games for Shoals while the Bulldogs slipped to 0-14 this year. They have lost 19 straight high school boys basketball games since they defeated SHS 41-40 a year ago.

"This was a game that we should have won," said UHS coach Chip Langley. "We let this one slip away."

The Bulldogs missed 7 of 9 shots to begin the game, falling behind 12-5 after the first quarter.

They shot 30 percent for the half -- 6 of 20 -- and trailed 22-16 at intermission.

"We came out cold," said Langley. "We only scored five points in the first quarter.

"I don't know if we were still caught up in the homecoming festivities or what."

The Bulldogs were much more competitive in the second half. They tied the game at 22, 24 and 26 before finally taking a 28-26 lead on a basket in the paint by Ethan Fettig with 81 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Zac Birdsong made 1 of 2 free throws and Austin Robertson got loose inside for a two-pointer as Union led 31-28 going to the fourth period.

"To the kids credit, they battled back and got back into the game," said Langley. "But we just couldn't find a way to finish this one off."

Union continued to build on its lead, taking a 35-30 advantage with 6:47 remaining after a running scoop shot by Sterling Langley.

Trey Bedwell scored his lone basket, giving the Bulldogs their final lead at 37-36 at the 5:51 mark.

Union did tie the game at 39 and 41-all after a Langley basket, set up by a pass from Zac Birdsong.

But Shoals, who made 6 of 10 3-pointers compared to 0-for-10 by Union, got consecutive treys by Dylan Erwin and Alex Doane, pushing the Jug Rox edge to 47-41. They made 4 of 5 long balls to finish the game.

Erwin led the winners with 17 points while Doane made three triples and finished with 10 points. Center Jon Sherfick added 11 points.

"They were able to make some 3-pointers in the fourth quarter than hurt us," said Langley. "They got three offensive rebounds off of missed free throws, which is something you can't allow.

"We did a better job of taking care of the basketball. We just came up a play or two short."

Fettig finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds on 8-for-10 shooting. Langley had 10 points on 5 of 9 firing from the field.

Robertson collected 11 points.

In the junior varsity game, Shoals also won 44-36.

Brayden Talley paced Union with 15 points. Parker Lovelace scored nine points, Melidian Maze eight and Dakota Chesterfield added four. Raylee Mesey, Skyler Mesey and Clay Figg also played.

The Bulldogs will host Owen Valley at 6 p.m. Saturday (tonight).
