SWITZ CITY -- Clay City played spoiler on homecoming as the visiting Eels defeated White River Valley 63-53 in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference high school boys basketball game here Saturday night.

The Eels are now 9-7 overall, 3-2 in the conference. WRV lost for the fourth consecutive time, falling to 8-7, 1-3 in the SWIAC.

The Eels outscored the Wolverines 30-14 over the middle two quarters, taking a 25-20 halftime lead and pushing it to 42-26 after three periods.

"If the sectional is going to be anything like the game tonight, it is going to be a heck of a sectional," said Clay City coach Vance Edmondson. "You had two very good teams that fought their hearts out tonight.

"White River Valley battled us right down to the end. It was good to get out of here with a win."

WRV went ahead 17-15 after a driving by Cade Hill with five minutes and 25 seconds left in the second quarter.

They would not score again until Justin Barnett beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer, cutting the Eel advantage to five points at intermission.

For the game, WRV shot 32 percent -- 17 of 54.

"I thought that Josh Miller did a good job on (Luke) Mowery," Edmondson said of limiting Mowery to three points. "But he also had a lot of help.

"We knew they were going to try to going inside to him. But they also missed a lot of open shots that they would normally make."

WRV would not go quietly into the cold January night. The Wolverines made more baskets (nine) in the fourth quarter than they connected on in the first three (eight).

Mitch Ingram and Michael Fisher scored on back-to-back baskets. Ingram scored on a putback when Fisher missed a free throw and a chance to cap off a three-point play as WRV climbed within 56-49 in the final 82 seconds.

Ingram, who made 6 of 11 shots including three treys and finished with 17 points, scored on another putback to trim the lead back to seven -- 58-51 with 42.4 seconds remaining.
