Lakers win regular-season finale

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Shakamak outscored visiting Cloverdale 38-29 in the second half, posting a 53-47 victory in a high school girls basketball game Tuesday night at Jasonville.

The Lady Lakers concluded the regular season with a 9-11 record while Cloverdale slipped to 7-13.

"This was one of the grind it out games that you have in girls basketball sometimes," said Shakamak coach Troy Fougerousse. "We missed 12 of 17 free throws and 17 or 18 layups, or bunnies we call them.

"We fought hard and got things going a little in the third quarter. We also had a nice fourth quarter."

Kelsey Pilant led the winners with 25 points. Megan Phipps added 11.

Shakamak won the junior varsity game 29-23 as Kierra Samm, Federica Arena and Megan Mattox each scored six points.

Shakamak will be off until Friday, Feb. 8 when they begin play at the Class A Clay City Sectional against the winner of the Eminence-Union game.
