BLOOMFIELD -- The host Cardinals made 11 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter as Bloomfield defeated Eminence 44-36 in a non-conference high school boys basketball game Tuesday night here at Glover Gymnasium.

Bloomfield's fifth straight victory in as many tries against the Eels pushed the Cardinals record to 10-7. Eminence slipped to 5-10.

"Eminence's kids came out and played very hard," said BHS coach Matt Britton. "This was a very physical game.

"They are very physical and did a good job of guarding us coming off of screens."

Bloomfield never led in the first half, trailing 14-9 after the opening eight minutes and 20-19 at the half after Conner Dowden and Ben Hays scored back-to-back hoops for the Cards in the final 32 seconds of the second quarter.

Eminence scored the first six points of the third quarter, pushing its lead to 25-20.

A layup by Brandon Van Sant gave the Cardinals their first lead -- 26-25 -- in the final 70 seconds of the third quarter.

Kyle Robinson, who led BHS with 15 points, got in the paint for another two-pointer, giving the Cards a 28-26 advantage going to the fourth quarter.

The second became a free throw shooting contest for the hosts, who made 15 of 19 free throws in the final 16 minutes. They hit 11 of 13 in the fourth quarter to hold off the pesky Eels, who made 4 of 6 freebies, which all came in the third quarter.

Jared Myers, who had four points, six assists and five steals for BHS, made all four of his foul shots in the final 93 seconds. Eli Combs connected on 2 of 4 in the fourth to account for all of his scoring.

Hays made 6 of 7 in the second half, including 2 of 3 foul shots in the fourth.

"We were able to battle back and get the lead in the fourth quarter," said Britton. "When they got behind, they had to foul and we were able to make our free throws to stay ahead.

"We were able to make just enough plays to get the win."

Britton said not all of his players were focused mentally.

"When you have one or two players that are mentally ready, it can affect everything you do," he said. "I can live with physical errors, but not mental ones.

"Hopefully this will be good lesson for us. We all have to be mentally focused and ready to play for 32 minutes. We have to learn from this and move forward."

Hays finished with 12 points and Robinson added 10 rebounds to his point total, giving him another double-double.

Nick Szalay led Eminence with 17 points.

Eminence won the junior varsity game 40-37.

Clayton Burch led the Cards with 11 points. Taylor Skinner scored eight points, Eli Combs seven points, Conner Dowden and Drake Frederick four each and Evan Fuller added three. Cole Deaton and J.J. Kingsley also played.

Bloomfield will host Class A No. 10 North Daviess in a conference game Friday night.
