UPDATED: Eastern Greene takes out South Knox on homecoming

Sunday, February 3, 2013

LITTLE CINCINNATI -- Eastern Greene continue its winning ways here Saturday night, celebrating homecoming at the expense of South Knox.

The 12-6 Thunderbirds extended their winning streak to three with a 60-44 victory.

South Knox slipped to 2-14.

Eastern Greene made 69 percent of its shots in the first half. They made 7 of 8 shots to begin the second quarter as they pushed a 14-9 cushion to 40-18 at intermission.

"That half was probably one of the best halves we have played all year," said Eastern Greene coach Levi Carmichael. "We really moved the ball well and Tyler (Brough) knocked down some tough shots."

In the second quarter, the Thunderbirds missed just three times in 14 attempts from the field. Brough made four straight baskets, including two threes.

Logan Frye made 3 of 5 shots in the quarter, Kurtis Stille was 1 of 2, Nathan Sparks made his only attempt and Jacob Henderson came off the bench to score six of his 11 points on two treys in the second.

When it was over, Eastern Greene had scored 26 points in the quarter and sent some of the Thunderbird faithful to the exits early so not to miss the Michigan-Indiana battle on TV.

Brough finished 8 of 14 shooting, leading the winners with 19 points. He also had nine rebounds, two assists and a block shot.

Stille, who was voted the homecoming king before the game, made 7 of 9 shots and tallied 14 points, giving EGHS three players in double figures. The Thunderbirds shot 58 percent for the game -- 26 of 45.

"Tyler really got us going in the second quarter," said Carmichael. "Kurtis played a great game. He plays with so much energy and makes so much happen for us.

"Jacob came in and really shot the ball well. It makes it tough for defenses when we can put in another shooter and stretch the floor."

Unlike Eastern Greene, South Knox struggled from the field, making 17 of 43 (40 percent). No Spartan scored in double figures as Colton Houchin and Austin Sievers both scored nine points.

Eastern Greene led by as many as 24 points -- 44-20 -- after the second of consecutive hoops in the paint by Stille with five minutes and 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Spartans won the second half, outscoring EGHS 26-20, but the final 16-point margin was as close as South Knox would get.

"South Knox is one of those scary teams," said Carmichael. "They have shown the ability to play well at times.

"They came in at the right time. We had a big win Friday at WRV and we had the distraction of homecoming. But the kids really played well. Anytime you can get two wins on a double weekend, you've got to be happy."

There were only five free throws attempted in the game, 1 of 3 by South Knox and Trevor Yoho hit both of the freebies for Eastern Greene.

In the junior varsity game, Eastern Greene won 38-33.

Cam Creager scored 12 points for the Thunderbirds. Camden Sego had nine points, Colden Roberts eight, Cole Chitwood five and Alex Brough scored four. Brent Price, Joe Smith and Devon Veatch also played.

Eastern Greene will play at Edgewood Thursday.

Note: Wright State University freshman and 2012 EGHS graduate JT Yoho was in attendance to watch his brother Trevor play. Their dad said it was the only time this season that JT would have the chance to watch his brother play.
