SULLIVAN -- The restoration project that has been the 2012-13 Linton-Stockton Lady Miners has gone into hibernation thanks to a 46-25 loss to South Knox at the Class 2A Sullivan Sectional Wednesday night.

"We knew we were in for a challenging game," Linton-Stockton coach Brad McKinney said. "You go back to November and look what that game was.

"They jumped on us 21-2 in the first quarter and we were down 40-11 at halftime."

With a better team on the floor than the one that fell to the Lady Spartans 63-25 in their fourth outing of the year, the Lady Miners were able to keep themselves in the game until a third quarter breakdown.

"At halftime they were probably over there scratching their heads wondering what was going on," McKinney said. "This time around it was a dogfight.

"I kept trying to tell everybody we were a better team than we were in November."

That's when South Knox took control and never relinquished it. The Lady Spartans won the battle of the scoreboard 27-11 in the last 16 minutes and put a 19-14 halftime lead in the rearview mirror.

"In the third quarter we didn't handle the pressure," McKinney said. "They came out and I knew they would.

"I knew they were going to come out and get us a little bit."

It came thanks to a combination of Lady Miner turnovers (5 of the 20 they committed), poor shooting 1 of 7) and an intensified South Knox offensive effort.

The Lady Spartans registered a 17-3 advantage in the third quarter as they extended the lead to 36-17 before hanging onto a 10-8 edge in the fourth quarter.

"We could tell them that, but they've got to brace themselves and prepare for that," McKinney said of the second half by the Lady Spartans. "One of our goals was to try and value the ball and in the third quarter that was one of the things that got away from us."

While South Knox was putting a pair of double-figure scorers in the books -- Olivia Carroll with 15 and Melissa Dare with 12 -- the Lady Miners only got eight points from Carlie Booe, seven from Mercedes Shafford, six from Courtney Johnson and four from Brilee Parker.

The loss also marked the end of the high school basketball career of the lone remaining player on the squad who was a part of the last L-S girls sectional title.

"We've got everybody back but Joie (Gadberry)," McKinney said. "I thanked her for the last four years.

"She was a part of that sectional championship as a freshman. So she's had the highs and the lows. But to her credit she's been the leader and worked hard, never gave and she will be hard to replace."

South Knox now has the unenviable task of trying to figure out a way to stop tournament favorite Sullivan in the second semifinal on Friday night.

The Class 2A No. 3 Lady Arrows advanced after knocking off Eastern Greene in the night's first game.

The Lady Miners conclude their season with a 3-19 mark while South Knox improved to 10-10.
