Clearing the way

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

It will be early 2015 before the new bridge on State Road 57 north of Newberry is complete, but preliminary site clearing work is now underway for the re-routed bridge and roadway. Construction is expected to start in the spring for the $15.5 million project. Federal funding will cover 80 percent of the project's cost. The new bridge over the White River will be more than 600 feet longer than the current 920 feet span. The structure will have a total width of 35 feet. The existing 410 feet long overflow bridge, located north of the river bridge structure, will be removed and replaced with a roadway embankment. The twin bridges have been restricted to one lane with a 14-ton weight limit since late 2009, when Indiana Department of Transportation engineers became concerned about the condition of the aging bridge structures.
