BICKNELL -- They'd suffered enough setbacks at the sectional.

That was the mindset for the Linton-Stockton Miners heading into Saturday's Class 2A Sectional 47 championship game at North Knox High School.

They had to fight through a shaky start to the second half, but they were able to snap a 31-year sectional drought with a 47-41 win over No. 5 Sullivan.

Class 2A No. 10 Linton-Stockton snapped a 31-year sectional drought at the expense of No. 5 Sullivan with a 47-41 Saturday night at North Knox Sectional 47. Above, seniors Jackson Bohnert (24), Austin Karazsia (21) and Dess Fougerousse hoist the trophy.

"It's amazing just to bring it back to Linton. We've always had success in every other sport - football, baseball, softball - it's good to finally bring the sectional championship back to Linton," senior Jackson Bohnert said following the win. "I think it's going to get the community back to the basketball games and everything else."

Perhaps Bohnert is the best one to define what the first title since 1982 means to the city. He's a quiet, productive, hard-working blue-collar type of player.

"I think everybody started realizing we had a special team this year," he said. "I think we're gonna go far, this is just the first stop."

Another area he defines well is the attitude of leave no unfinished business - no matter how hard or how long you have to put yourself into the fracas to get it accomplished.

"That goes along with coach (Joey) Hart," Bohnert said. "If we mess up we run, even if we don't mess up we run - we've got to stay in shape for games like this.

"If it comes down to the wire we've just got to stay strong."

Almost as if it were poetic justice, after watching fellow senior starters Austin Karazsia (13 points, nine rebounds) and Dess Fougerousse (17 points, nine rebounds) take the spotlight, Bohnert (five points, two rebounds) was credited with the final dagger in the Golden Arrows' chances.

With just 4.9 seconds remaining he stepped to the line and nailed one of two free throws, then fell back to the other end and - just a few seconds later - joined his team and fellow students in a massive celebration at midcourt.

Linton-Stockton - ranked No. 10 - will play in Saturday's Southridge Regional against No. 8 Clarksville at 1 p.m. in the Huntingburg Memorial Gym. The tournament gets under way at 11 a.m. when No. 13 Perry Central meets Switzerland County.

Tickets for the event are $7 for single sessions seats and are $10 for all-session passes.

All-session passes can be purchased at Lou Baker's office at the high school from 2 p.m. on Wednesday until Friday afternoon.
