What sequestration/furloughs mean to you

To the Editor:

With sequestration taking place, major impacts will be affecting our communities. Crane Navy and Army will be furloughing employees one day a week for 22 weeks. This is a 20 percent pay cut for all those employees.

The state and surrounding counties will be receiving less money for their tax base. All local businesses, schools and municipalities will feel the impact. Crane employees will be cutting out things like eating out, less trips in their vehicles, attending school functions, prolonging visits to the doctors and dentists, waiting longer to receive haircuts, as well as, cutting grocery spending that supports our local economy.

Not only does sequestration affect Crane Naval and Army, it affects Border Patrol Workers, VA Hospital Workers, FBI Agents, USDA Inspectors, Social Security Office workers, TSA Workers in the airports, National Park Services, Environmental Protection Agencies, Air Traffic Controllers, Correctional Officers, Food and Drug Administration Workers, and the list goes on.

In Indiana alone this means cutting $13.8 million for secondary education, 2,170 fewer low income students to receive college aid, approximately 1,000 students not receiving Head Start and Early Head Start, $3.3 million loss of environmental funding, 11,000 Department of Defense employees furloughed, 2,770 fewer children will receive vaccines, 600 disadvantaged and vulnerable children could lose child care, Public Health Programs could lose $619,000 in funding, Nutrition Assistance for seniors could lose $820,000 in funding and so on.

So what can you do? Call, email, or write your senators and congressman and tell them to stop sequestration/furloughs: Sen. Dan Coats (202) 224-5623, www.coats.senate.gov; Sen, Joe Donnelly (202) 224-4814, www.donnelly.senate.gov; Rep. Todd Young 9th District 202-225-5315, www.toddyoung.house.gov ; Rep. Larry Bucshon 8th District (202) 225-4636, www.bucshon.house.gov; Rep. Todd Rokita 4th District (202) 225-5037, www.rokita.house.gov

Golf ball drive

a big success

To the Editor:

A big thank you to all who stopped by Linton's Humphreys Park to donate golf balls and golf equipment to the troops overseas.

The response to my Dad's golf ball drive for troops overseas was very rewarding. The following counts are official as of late Sunday night:

* 4,207 Golf Balls

* 16 full sets of clubs (with bags).

* One pair of golf cleats.

* A number of tees.

* Hundreds of egg cartons

> A number of letters, notes, and cards to the troops.

There is still time to donate ... as I would love to have a total of 5,000 by this Friday.

My Dad and grandmother are gone to Indianapolis to visit family; however, I am accepting donations via pickup.

Do contact me ASAP if you can help.

This is much appreciated and we cannot thank you enough.

Area youth help

Salvation Army

To the Editor:

So many times we hear about how our next generation is going to the dogs, but there are still a great number of young people caring and willing to give of their time to help other people by ringing the bell in Linton and Bloomfield for the Salvation Army.

The staff of the Greene County Salvation Army want to say thank you to Chip Sweet and his baseball team at Shakamak, Jane Siepman (FCCLA Sponsor at Shakamak), Kenna Slough (FFA Sponsor at Shakamak), Steve Brett (varsity basketball coach at Shakamak), Betsy Misner (FCCLA Sponsor at WRV), Julie Johnson (Juvenile Probation Officer in Greene County), and youth volunteer Lexi Kay Pearson.

These young people gave approximately 150 hours of their time collecting money to help others who fall upon hard times. Approximately $3,000 was raised to help the people of our community, but more is still needed. Contributions can still be made by sending checks or money orders to the Salvation Army at 132 E. Main St. Suite 3, Bloomfield, Ind., 47424. Remember that the money raised in Greene County, stays in Greene County.

Thank you to everyone who gave and those who helped ring the bell for this year's Kettle Campaign.

What a wonderful 65th anniversary celebration you made possible for us by your presence at our reception.

We want to thank everyone for the lovely cards we received and from those of you that were not able to attend.

Thank you so much for the memories you made for us.

We want to thank our children Bill and Brenda Rennels, Richard and Debbie Bowersock, George and Chris Rollins and our grandchildren and great grandchildren for giving us so many wonderful memories. The video was such a heart-filled surprise for us.

Thanks to all our families, church families, and neighbors and the Scotland Full Gospel church for the use of their fellowship hall. Thank you so much for making our 65th anniversary a day of remembrance.

May God bless each of you.
