To the Editor:

The first weekend in May is the time once again for the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Days. The Poppy Program raises community awareness and respect for our veterans.

Connecting the visual image of the poppy with sacrifice of service made by our veterans has been an important goal of the American Legion Auxiliary. This distribution of the bright red memorial flower to the public is one of the oldest and most widely recognized programs in the American Legion Auxiliary, and as a result of their distribution a grateful financial benefit is realized by our nation's veterans.

These poppies are made by the disabled veterans. Our American Legion Auxiliary purchases the poppies and makes them available to the generous people of our area communities. From their generosity we are proudly able to aid and support our local veterans and military.

The Auxiliary is proud to have the help and assistance of our American Legionaries and Sons of the American Legion during our Poppy Weekend of May 3-4.

The blood of heroes never dies,

But lends a luster to the red

Of the flower that blooms above the dead

In Flanders Fields.
