WRV alumna remarks on final WRV versus Dugger game

Friday, March 7, 2014

Dear Editor:

I recently attended the final home game of the Union Dugger boys basketball team in a game against my alma mater, White River Valley. It was sort of a bitter sweet experience. WRV won the game, but the feeling I got of being in a gymnasium that will never be used again for a high school basketball game was overwhelmingly sad.

As they honored their seniors at half time I couldn't help but reminisce about the history of Dugger basketball. In the hallway as you walk in to the school there are pictures of past Dugger players like Joey Hart, Brody Boyd, etc. I wonder what will happen to those pictures... I saw past Dugger coach Joe Hart in attendance sporting a gold blazer just like when he used to coach. I wonder what will happen to that gold blazer... I remembered the games I played there as a high school kid at WRV. I wonder if my mind will hold on to those memories...

Union Dugger School is coming to an end, as we know it, at the end of this school year. I know that the community of Dugger is looking into a charter school and I think that is great, but from what I understand the school must sell EVERYTHING in that building before the charter can take over.

Books...desks...computers...refrigerators...pictures...banners... That is going to be some "yard sale".

The residents of the WRV communities have an important decision to make in the upcoming election. There will be a referendum on the ballot to vote yes or no for a $.41 increase in taxes to help fund our school. At the status quo, WRV has enough money for approximately a year and a half to two years. After that, anything is possible. I know that nobody likes higher taxes, I get that. But, I sure don't want to go through the anguish that the Dugger community is going through. I sure don't want to become Bloomfield West or Linton East. I sure don't want to have our own "yard sale". And, I can't imagine that gym floor at WRV being painted a different color.

Vote YES, WRV Referendum
