Seven proves to be Eastern’s lucky number in win over Mitchell
Come seven in the seventh inning, come victory.
The visiting Lady Thunderbirds (2-6) erupted for seven runs in the final inning Tuesday night to smoke Mitchell 15-6 in softball.
"We fought seven innings to get it done,” said a jubilant Eastern coach Mike Prince.
Mitchell (0-9) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Neither team scored again until the fourth; then the fireworks began.
Eastern scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Bluejackets tied the score with one in their half of the inning. Eastern put two more on the scoreboard in the fifth, but Mitchell rallied to take a 5-4 lead with three in the hosts’ at-bat.
Gracie Rollins slugged a bases-loaded double in the sixth and Chloe Kirkman drove in two runs with two outs as Eastern scored four runs and took the lead for good, 8-5. Evelyn George slammed another bases-loaded double in the seventh to key the seven-run explosion. The Lady Bluejackets mustered one run in a feeble comeback.
“We settled down,” Prince said. “We finally started hitting the ball.”
Jena Thomas pitched all seven innings to notch the win. Prince said she grew a little tired in the late innings, but persevered for the victory. He added the Lady Thunderbirds supported her with good defense.
“When we needed the outs, they started getting them,” he said.
Before the season, Prince told the Daily World that the Eastern girls had a goal of winning two games this year, a vast improvement over four previous winless seasons. Now that they have achieved that goal, he said, they can work on notching more W’s.
“We can hope to give Bloomfield and WRV a run for the money,” he said.
Eastern will travel to Loogootee at 5:00 p.m. Thursday.
