ELNORA — After a tight match Thursday evening, the Lady Cardinals tennis squad can now proudly call themselves sectional champions.

Coach Canty was jubilant as the sectional plaque was handed to the Cardinals and explained that during the beginning of the season, even though the team had the possibility of struggling, they were able to pull through.

It was the sixth sectional championship in the past seven years for the Lady Cardinals.

“We lost many seniors and good players, such as Emily Bucher, Mariah Long and Rachael Hasler, all of them in the top ten wins, and it was going to be a struggle for us to get there, but we were really able to pull through,” Canty said.

Canty mentioned Felicity Graf as being one of the key components to the Cardinals success.

“We got some really good playing out of many of the kids who really did not have a whole lot of varsity experience. It was really gratifying seeing this season progress and the efforts made by the team,” Canty said.

Canty explained going into the match tonight, that it was going to be a tough match.

“We played North Daviess before and we knew what kind of teams they have had in the past, so we knew it was not going to be an easy match. Also, sectionals are different. There are emotions brought into it, and every player knew, especially for the seniors, that this match could have been their last,” Canty said.

Canty said the team is looking forward to the regionals yet at the present moment, their opponent has not been announced.

For the scores this evening, at No. 1 singles, Felicity Graf was able to win a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 over North Daviess’ No. 1 Madison Bors.

At No. 2 singles, Malea Toon started the first set down, losing 3-6, but was able to recover the next two the Lady Cougars’ Michelle Dinkins winning 6-2, 6-1.
