Seven teams compete in Miner Shootout
With the exception of the IHSAA baseball State Finals at Victory Field this weekend, spring sports season has concluded for high schools throughout Indiana.
But itís always basketball season in the Hoosier state.
Seven high school basketball teams laced up the sneakers in the annual Miner Shootout at the Linton-Stockton gym Friday.
Clay City, Cloverdale, North Knox, Rockville, Sullivan and Turkey Run joined the host Miners for the two-day event.
The summer shootouts give coaches an opportunity to watch their teams in game situations and gauge individual playersí progress during the offseason.
Linton-Stockton played three games Friday. The Miners defeated North Knox 46-26 and Sullivan 50-41 but lost to Cloverdale 60-56 in overtime.
The hot-shooting Clovers led by double digits, 25-15 at the 5-minute mark of the first half. A pair of fast break baskets by Noah Clark pulled the hosts within 27-23 at the break.
The Miners took a 38-33 lead with eight minutes remaining on successive driving layups from Tucker Hayes.
But four missed free throws in the final minute allowed Cloverdale to get back in it.
Jalen Moore was fouled behind the 3-point line with 14.2 seconds left giving Moore three free throws and the Clovers a chance to tie. Moore made the first two but missed the third. Sammy Robbins rebounded, was fouled and hit 1-of-2 at the line to put Linton ahead 48-46.
Moore drove the lane for the tying bucket, sending the game to the extra session where Cloverdale hung on for the win.
The Miner Shootout continues Saturday.
