Elbert Keith Nichols, 76, of Bloomfield, passed away Friday, June 16, 2017 at IU Health Bloomington Hospice House.
He was born on March 25, 1941 in Monroe County, the son of Elbert I. and Fonnie G. (Timmons) Nichols.
Keith was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in March of 1964. In October of that year, he married Joyce (Ferguson) Nichols, and they shared 52 years of marriage together. Keith began his career as a journeyman iron worker, and went on to become a mechanic and radiator repairman. He was a master mechanic for three coal mines, and owned his own repair shop, helping anyone day or night.
Keith was a member of Masonic Lodge 84 in Bloomfield, and was an avid race fan. He enjoyed both watching and participating. Keith will be remembered as a selfless and giving man whose main joy in life was his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Keith is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce Nichols; sons, Kevin (Cathy) Turpin, Richard (Brenda) Nichols, Jim (Andrea) Nichols and Joe (Tina) Nichols; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Mike Nichols and sister, Jeannie Nichols.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dickie Nichols; one grandchild; and many other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 20 at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington. Burial will follow at South Union Christian Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 19 at the funeral home.
