A memorial run/walk for Layla Raines will take place at Shakamak Jr/Sr High School this coming Saturday, August 12 at 7:30 p.m.

“Layla did track last year, and really grew to love running long distances and was going to do Cross Country this year,” said Brandy Raines.

Raines was also in show choir. The 5K, hosted by the family of Layla Raines costs $20 in advance and $25 on raceday.

15-year-old Layla Michelle-Ann Raines of Jasonville passed away in late May after she was struck by a car. A candlelight vigil was held May 31 in the school gymnasium.

Age groups for the fundraiser are under 12, 13-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and over 70.

“Everyone needs the chance to participate,” Raines said of the wide range of age groups and abilities for the event.

For every age group, there will be a male and female winner, and every winner will be gifted a package of forget-me-not flowers to plant in memory of a loved one.

The memorial walk/run will raise funds for the Layla Raines Memorial Scholarship to benefit other students.

For those who could not register before the July 28 deadline, late registration will be accepted until the beginning of the race. Day-of registrations, as well as t-shirts and bracelets will be available for purchase at the event.

Participants will also recieve coupon cards courtesy of Chick-Fil-A for either a free sandwich or 8-piece chicken nuggets.

Registrations can be mailed to Micki Strunk at 194 Concord Rd in Spencer, IN (47460).
