DUGGER -- One night after earning their first win, serve receive errors and poor communication by the Lady Bulldogs allowed Medora to beat them for its first win in volleyball.

The Lady Hornets (1-4) exploited numerous Union errors and hung on to beat the Lady Bulldogs (1-4) 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23. Union coach Lois Astleford noted the loss came one day after Union beat Lighthouse Christian for its first win of the season.

“Last night was great,” Astleford said. “We played five and won the last three. Today, they just weren’t playing together like they should.”

The Lady Bulldogs made too many serve receive errors, the coach continued, partially from a lack of communication. She added Medora also beat the Lady Dawgs at the net.

“They didn’t work too well together,” Astleford said. “They played hard, but they didn’t have their heart in it, I guess.”

Union began the match well, going up 11-5 with four service points by Madison Marlow, one coming on Rainy Kinnard’s kill. The hosts appeared to be on easy street after boosting the lead to 16-8, but Medora fought back.

Errors helped the Lady Hornets cut the deficit to 17-15. The teams swapped points, then Medora reeled off seven straight points for a 23-18 lead. Union scored another point, but two errors allowed Medora to win 25-19.

The second game began as a hard-fought battle. Two serve receive errors and a kill by Mollie Pittman staked the Lady Dawgs to a 3-0 lead. Medora refused to say die and forced four ties, the last coming at 8-8.

Two aces gave Medora an 11-8 lead, but Marlow pushed for a point and Kinnard tipped for another as Union rallied to take a 13-11 lead on four service points by Marlow. Pittman drilled an ace and both teams committed several boo-boos as they fought to five more ties, the last coming at 19-all. Union broke that tie with three straight points and Maddy Vandeventor later served two more, the final point coming on an ace, to give Union a 25-20 win.

Serve receive errors helped Union jump out to a 6-3 lead, but the Lady Hornets rallied to tie the game with three straight points. After two ties, the Lady Hornets scored three more points for an 11-8 lead.

Medora maintained that slim lead for a long stretch, going up 17-13 at one point, but the Lady Bulldogs answered every Medora rally. A kill by Pittman and an ace by Marlow helped Union knot the score at 19 apiece. The teams kept scrapping, Pittman scoring a point with a block, as they remained even, 23-23. Medora ended the game on a serve that hit the net and an ace.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the final game. Vandeventor served two points as the Lady ‘Dogs responded with a 8-2 run.

The visitors increased their lead to 14-9, but Union forced sideout and Brooklynn Williams served seven points, one an ace and another coming on Pittman’s tip, to give Union a 17-14 lead. The Lady Hornets stayed close and a dropped ball enabled them to force a 19-19 tie. Two more deadlocks and the Lady Hornets ended the game and match with a 3-1 run.

Union will venture to Turkey Run at 6:00 p.m. Thursday.
