Bloomfield’s hitters power sweep of Lady Wolverines
SWITZ CITY -- Bloomfield’s hitters and servers proved too strong for White River Valley Tuesday night as the Lady Cardinals swept three sets in volleyball.
The Lady Cards (8-9, 5-0 in the Southwest Indiana Athletic Conference) used powerful spiking and serving to beat WRV 25-20, 25-11, 25-20.
“We had a good night tonight. We cam in strong and played hard,” Bloomfield coach Laura Rose said. “We needed a good win like that, a good conference win.”
Both she and WRV coach Shaun Brown agreed Bloomfield’s hitters -- Malea Toon, Elizabeth Combs, and Kylee Shelton -- ate their Wheaties Tuesday morning and delivered impressive performances at the net.
“They had pretty good hitters,” Brown said.
He added that the Lady Wolverines (6-9, 1-3) missed Kaylie Gayheart who is out with an injury. Payton FRanklin led WRV with 14 kills.
“We played pretty good, but ... their good servers and serve receive seemed to give us problems tonight,” Brown said.
The first game started off as anyone’s contest. Shelton, Combs, and Franklin of WRV all thumped kills as the teams fought to a long series of six ties, the last coming at 14-all on a Combs kill. Hayley England served two points, one an ace, to give the Lady Cards a 17-15 lead they never relinquished. Franklin and Combs swapped point-scoring kills and Combs served three more points, Shelton scoring two of them with a block and a kill, to boost the Bloomfield margin to 20-15.
WRV forced sideout and mounted a comeback with two service points by Lia Ragle, one an ace and one coming on a Franklin kill. Toon ended the brief rally with a kill, and the teams swapped a couple of points before Toon planted a kill on the back line to scoring the winning point.
Rose said the Lady Cardinals started the game well and maintained a good attitude throughout the match. She said that positive attitude persisted, even when WRV mounted a late rally in the third set.
“I’m proud of them,” she said. “They really came together tonight. They stayed positive. We played well.”
Bloomfield snapped a 2-2 tie in the second set with three service points by Combs. Franklin blocked Toon for a point, but the visitors got the ball back on a sideout and setter Malea Ramsey served three more points, Toon smacking down an overpassed ball for one.
Franklin hammered a kill and Ragle drilled two aces as the Lady Wolverines cut the deficit to 10-7. However, Toon smashed a kill and Combs blocked Franklin’s spike attempt as the Lady Cards responded with a 5-1 run. The Lady Wolverines gained sideout and Kaitlyn Abrams pounded a kill to cut the lead to 15-10. Then Combs and England took control.
Combs slapped a kill for sideout and England served six points for a 22-10 lead. Three straight points came on Combs kills and Shelton got into the act with a block. Abrams spiked for sideout, but Combs returned the ball to Bloomfield with a kill, and served the game out, the last point coming on an ace.
The third game began the same way: Combs knocked a kill for a sideout and England served three points, Shelton swatting down an overpassed ball and hammering a kill for two, to give the Lady Cards a 4-0 lead.
Franklin blasted two kills to help her team knot the score at four apiece. Combs smashed a kill for sideout and served nine straight points for a 14-4 lead. Toon scored three straight points by tipping the ball, blocking Franklin’s tip attempt, and batting down an overpassed ball; then WRV committed four serve consecutive receive errors.
Bloomfield stayed on top by a comfortable margin, leading 23-13 as kills by Becky Riggs, Toon, England, and Combs and a tip and an ace by Shelton offset two kills and a block by Franklin and an ace by Thrasher. Then WRV mounted a furious comeback.
A net violation gave the ball to WRV and Abrams served five straight points, one coming on a Franklin kill and two coming on violations, to curb the deficit to 23-19. The teams swapped bad serves and Toon ended the game with a kill.
Brown said the Lady Wolverines served the ball with authority and passed well at times.
“Once we passed the ball, we were able to get some kills and get some momentum,” Brown said, “but it seemed like we couldn’t get a pass again.”
WRV (3-9, 3-1) defeated Bloomfield 25-24, 19-25, 15-9 to win the JV game.
