Colts name Paridaen Coach of the week
The Indianapolis Colts on Monday named Eastern’s Joey Paridaen Coach of the Week.
A press release from the Colts said the organization selected Paridaen after Eastern defeated Linton, the ninth-ranked team in Class 2A, 35-12 Friday night. The release also noted the Thunderbirds (8-0 and ranked third in Class 1A football) have won their first eight games for the first time in school history.
“I’m honored, obviously,” Paridaen said. “I think more than anything it’s an indication of how far our program has come.”
He explained the Eastern players, parents, community members, and fellow coaches have worked hard to make Eastern’s program what it is today.
Paridaen also said the award surprised him. “I wasn’t even fairly familiar with the award. I had heard of it before.”
According to the press release, the Colts selected Paridaen from a list of 10 coaches from all over the state. The release said: “Coaches are evaluated on various factors including the coach’s impact on his team, school and community, as well as performance of the team. The honorees are selected by a panel of high school football media, former athletic directors and other football representatives from all regions of the state.”
Each Monday, following a high school football game weekend, the release said, one head coach will be announced. At the conclusion of the high school football season, each winning coach will receive a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Colts head coach Chuck Pagano, Colts general manager Chris Ballard, and Colts Youth Football Commissioner Mike Prior, as well as a $1,000 donation from the NFL Foundation. Also, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the sponsor of the Coach of the Week program, will contribute $1,000 to the school’s athletic fund.
“That’s one of the most exciting things to me,” Paridaen said. “That’s money we can spend on our athletic programs.”
This season marks the eighteenth year the Indianapolis Colts will recognize outstanding Hoosier high school football coaches through the Colts/NFL Coach of the Week program. All high school head coaches in Indiana are eligible regardless of the school’s size, league or division.
