South Knox buries cold-shooting Lady Wolverines
SWITZ CITY – Turnovers, cold shooting and surrendering offensive rebounds told the story for the White River Valley Lady Wolverines in Tuesday’s season opener against South Knox.
White River Valley turned the ball over 29 times - 17 in the first half alone. The Lady Wolverines connected on just 4-of-19 field goals in the first half and 5-of-27 through three quarters, en route to a 10-for-38 (26.3 percent) shooting night. And South Knox corralled 13 offensive rebounds the first 16 minutes.
It all added up to 56-29 win for the visiting Lady Spartans.
“That was the story of the game,” Lady Wolverines coach Mark Graves said. “You can’t turn the ball over 17 times in the first half.
“They knocked down some big shots early. They got us down in a hole and we just couldn’t get out of it.”
Part of the reason WRV couldn’t dig its way out of the hole was because South Knox enjoyed a whopping 43-23 rebounding advantage - 21 of those off the offensive glass.
The Lady Spartans were nearly as generous with the giveaways turning it over 19 times. But the Lady Wolverines were unable to capitalize to the degree the opponents were.
WRV was behind the eight-ball right from the outset as South Knox ran off the game’s first 10 points.
Kristie Williams scored inside. Chase Keller fed Hannah Ivers for a layup and scored on a second-chance bucket. Mykayla Couchenour nabbed a steal and raced in for a layup, then got free for another bunny.
In one sequence, South Knox hauled down four offensive boards, missing four times before Paige Cavins knocked down a short jumper from the baseline.
Sydney Stahl and Lacey Fisher answered with threes for the Lady Wolverines. But WRV only managed to hit 2-of-11 shots in the opening stanza.
Williams’ fast-break bucket at the horn gave South Knox a 15-6 lead after the first break.
The margin soon grew to 19 as the Lady Spartans embarked on their second 10-0 run starting off the second stanza.
Cavins fed Keller for a baseline jumper. Page came up with a steal and got it ahead to Cavins for a layup, then scored twice on putbacks. Williams knocked down both ends of the one-and-bonus before WRV’s Claire Hostetter converted 1-of-2 at the stripe to halt the rally.
The Lady Wolverines got within 14, 27-13 after Stahl knocked down her second triple, Hostetter swished another freebie and Addi Graves scored in the lane.
But WRV would get no closer on this night. A throwaway led to a fast-break and an old-fashioned 3-point play for Page as South Knox took a 31-13 lead into the locker room at intermission.
Hostetter sank a pair of charity tosses and Morrison buried a three to trim the deficit to 15, 33-18 at the five-miute mark of the third.
But the visitors soon pushed it back to 20. Page sank a pair of free tosses and nailed a triple off an inbounds pass from Keller.
And that was all she wrote on this night.
“I actually felt our defense didn’t look bad,” Graves said. “We made them take some contested shots. And give South Knox some credit. They’ve got some good shooters.”
Graves, Stahl and Morrison paced WRV with six points apiece.
WRV was without the services of center Kaylie Gayheart as they will be for the duration of the season. Gayheart suffered a torn rotator cuff during volleyball season and is scheduled to undergo surgery.
The Lady Wolverines are back in action Friday when they travel to Mitchell.
“We’ll see if we can’t improve and try to fix some things,” said Graves.
