TOP STORIES OF 2017: No. 4 -- Grain bin in Switz City collapses, explodes

Monday, January 1, 2018

A Switz City incident on a farm which resulted in a viral video was voted the number 4 story of 2017.

Around 1 p.m. Monday, July 31, Jordan White of William White Farms, Inc. in Switz City posted a video to facebook that, when the Daily World published its coverage, had already been seen by more than a million people.

The video showed an overhead tank filled with more than 10,000 bushel of corn collapsed as it was being unloaded into a truck, taking down a power line on its way and sending up a fireball when the highly flammable grain dust was ignited by an electrical spark. Steve White, the posterís father, suspected at the time it was a problem with the steel of the five-year-old grain bin. White said the resulting 180 foot wave caused extensive damage, and the loss of the bin would be detrimental to the upcoming harvest if not replaced quickly.

An Aug. 7 Facebook post by Indiana Farmers Insurance, who insures White Farms, revealed that a few days after the accident, Indiana Farmers President and CEO Kim Smith delivered the claims check to Steve and Bill White.
