SWITZ CITY -- Bloomfield electrocuted the Clay City Eels Friday night in the second semifinal of the White River Valley Sectional.

The Cardinals (15-9) limited Clay City (7-17) to one trifecta for the first 10:35 of the first half and cruised to a 64-31 win. They will face Shakamak (9-15) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

“I thought out kids came out and played for four quarters,” Bloomfield coach Jamie Hudson said.

“They were just better than us tonight,” said Clay City coach Vance Edmondson. “Their size really hurt us. They were really aggressive on both sides of the floor.”

Their defense was so dominating, the Cardinals:

Took a 34-7 halftime lead and a 55-18 lead after three periods. That margin allowed Hudson to play the reserves for the entire fourth quarter.

Kyler Hudson eyes the bucket as he gets ready to put up a free throw. He sank all four of his foul shots to score 10 points for Bloomfield.

Held Clay City to 10-40 (25.0 percent) shooting from the field. No Eel hit double digits as Corbin Crosby led the team with six points. Hudson pointed out Nathan Owens only scored three.

“Jamie did a good job with his game plan,” Edmondson said, “taking the three’s away from us and forcing us to put the ball on the floor.”

Pounded the Eels on the boards, outrebounding Clay City 36-21 for the game. Ten Cardinals snagged at least one board.

Forced Clay City into 18 turnovers, six more than Bloomfield. The Cards swiped the ball 11 times, Patrick Beard, Kyler Hudson, and Kapek each tallying two swipes.

Both coaches agreed a major factor in Bloomfield’s defensive dominance was the play of 6-foot-6 Isaac Combs and 6-foot-7 Tad Kapek. They forced the Eels to alter several shots and put up 17 of their 40 field goal attempts from three-point range. Kapek swatted down four shots and Hudson blocked one.

“We didn’t do too badly,” coach Hudson said. “I thought our defense tonight was really, really good. I thought Kyler and Tad did a really good job on Crosby and Owens, holding those two guys to nine points.”

“You’ve got to give credit to Bloomfield,” Edmondson said. “They did a good job defensively on us. They just did a good job of pressing us and funneling us to the big guys.”

The Cards blistered the nets, connecting on 24-38 field goal attempts (63.2 percent). Combs led the team with 12 points, but Hudson, Andrew Shelton, and Mitchell Burch each scored 10. Ten of 12 Cardinals to take the floor got on the scoreboard.

“It was a good team effort,” coach Hudson said. “That’s what we preach.”

He said was pleased with Bloomfield’s 12 assists, although no player had more than two. “Our goal is to have 15 or 16 assists per game.”

The victors also did a good job of getting to the free throw line, Hudson added, forcing the Eels into 19 fouls and converting 13-22 (59.1 percent) foul shots.
