T-Birds, Lady Miners win Keith Jones Invite

Friday, April 27, 2018

The Eastern Greene Thunderbirds and the Linton-Stockton Lady Miners bested all challengers in the eight-team Keith Jones Invitational boys and girls track and field meet Friday at Clay City.

In the boys competition, Eastern Greene outdistanced second-place Clay City in the team standings 152-124. Linton-Stockton edged North Knox 105-102 for third place.

“We had a very good day, as a team,” said EHS boys coach Bill Valentine. “We had a lot of personal best performances.”

The Thunderbird 4X100 team of Issiah Thornton, Cayden Sego, Austin Bixler, and Jaden Evans broke a 28-year-old school record to win that event with a time of 45.40 seconds. Valentine said they had labored hard on their exchanges.

Jailyn Lundy of White River Valley only placed third in the high jump, but her leap of five feet, two inches set a new WRV school record.

“I was very pleased to win the meet by a margin of what we did,” Valentine said, “but we have our sights set on the SWIAC meet next Friday and I think we will do even better. “

The girls meet was a three-way battle for first place between Linton-Stockton, Shakamak and WRV.

With 15 events scored the Lady Miners led the Lady Lakers by 14 points, 130-116. Shakamak was 13 points ahead of third-place White River Valley (103). Eastern Greene was sixth, trailing North Knox by one-half point, 51.5-51.

Eastern Greene’s Jaysce Skinner was the day’s standout performer among the boys. Skinner won both jumps and finished second in both hurdles races.

“Skinner had  2 jumps in the long jump over 20 feet, “ Valentine said. “I was pleased with that.”

Skinner jumped six feet, one inch to take first place in the high jump. His winning leap of 20 feet, 3.5 inches was a scant one inch better than Linton’s Lance Dyer’s second-place effort.

Linton’s Cameron Parola was a double winner, running the 1,600 meters in four minutes, 44.76 seconds and the 800 meters in 2:09.02.

The WRV duo of Clayton Hoover and Eddie Garcia finished 1-2 in the discus. Hoover’s winning throw measured 137-6. Garcia won the shot put with a heave of 43-10, a foot-and-a-half farther than second-place Jason Childress of Eastern Greene.

Eastern’s Ethan Helton was the area’s other individual winner, winning the 400 in 53.98 seconds.

Other top finishers included EG’s Jaden Evans, second in the 200 with a time of 23.94 and WRV’s Joe Records, second in the 3,200 in 11:04.04.

Linton's Vanessa Shafford was a double winner in the shot put and discus at the Keith Jones Invitational.

On the girls side Shakamak’s Jacy Collins dominated the distance races winning the 800 (2:36.19), 1,600 (5:42.66) and 3,200 (12:54.31). Clay City’s Alexis Laswell finished second to her Lady Lakers nemesis in all three events.

Both of Eastern's relay teams won. The 4X800 team of Jessica DeFord, Sierra Ford, Farrah Young, and Emma Stichter posted a time of 11:19.50, and the 4X400 team of Shelley Tarr, Stichter, DeFord, and Young recorded 4:45.98.

“It was a good night for us,” said Eastern girls coach David Young. “We are continuing to drop most of times and increasing our distances. Our 4X80 and 4X400 relays keep getting better and smoother.”

Shakamak’s Phoenix Pena nipped Tucker for second place in the 100 and finished second to Tucker in the 400.

Six of the eight teams will now prepare themselves for the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference championships Thursday, May 3 and Friday, May 4 at Linton.

“We as a coaching staff are satisfied with our results tonight. We thought our kids gave it their all, and that is what we ask them to do day in and day out,” said WRV assistant coach Conner Hill. “As we head into next week, we hope to help get our kids both mentally and physically prepared for the SWIAC Conference meet.“
